wondering what the logic is for the short barreled turkey guns, 22, or 23 inch barrels. I gather its so you can swing quicker, gets on birds easier, but is there more to it?

any adverse effects on range, that type of thing?

Longer barrels in shotguns are basically to add a longer sighting plane for better aiming but most turkey guns have some type of sighting system be it rifle sights or a scope or red dot. The other thing is the myth that a longer barrel shoots harder. In the old black powder days that was definitely the case but the modern fast burning powders used these days basically are burnt within about 20 inches so a barrel much longer than that doesn't really help in velocity of shot. The other thing is a shorter barrel is less likely to get caught upon twigs when swinging the gun for a shot.

Terry is correct in his reply, the only thing that I have to add is that after testing the short to the long barrels, I found that the 26 patterned better then the 24 in Bennelli. Most turkey hunters are now using optics on their guns so sight plain don't matter anymore. I've always carried a long barrel turkey gun and have never had a whole lot of problems killing birds with it...

Adrian, the point I was trying to make is that short barrel won't impede ballistic performance of the shot. Shotgun powder is very different than rifle powder which actually does benefit from a longer barrel. The patterning of a barrel has more to do with the design of the forcing cone and the choke itself moreso than the length of the barrel. I guess what I'm saying is , short or long the bird won't know the difference LoL !!!

well said Terry. You potentially do a lot of walking when turkey hunting and get into bushes cover etc. I enjoy the shorter barrel for this reason. 20 inch is my gun. It is not to swing quicker on birds. I don't see that as a feature.

My Beretta Urika has a 24" barrel and a red dot.

thanks for the reply guys, I think I'm going to get this gun for turkey hunting, wanted to make sure there were no real adverse effects. It has rifle sights, but I think I may end up putting a red dot on it as well. i got one of those b square shotgun mounts, so il likely try it out.

You will love the red dot. The nice thing is you don't have to be perfectly aligned with the thing, as soon as that red circle lines up with the bird, BOOM!!!! The other thing is you actually sight it in so it shoots exactly to your point of aim. MAny people who shoot single beads on shotguns have big surprises when they pattern the guns and realize that the impact doesn't always match what they thought.

I agree with AH after patterning a 26 and 28 barrel in the same gun there was a big difference, but like said the shorter is lot nicer to carry in the woods.
Experience is what you gain from not getting something you wanted.

fjj. the issue is 2 different barrels and not the 2 inches of length. I suspect my 20 inch barrel patterns better than your 28 inch. I have not come across many 12 guages that outperform my gun as I have it set up now with the loads I am using.

Tom, I have held that gun. A guy I know who owns one. I tell you I was tempted to run out and buy one. I really liked the feel, balance and action. It is a very nice gun.

Work on loads and chokes and you'd have quite the turkey set up for sure.

Quit crying , you know that we are not all wrong here. 2 inch difference is still a difference, why buy one if the other shoots better

Actually, there was an article that appearred in the last year in the "Rifle Sporting Journal" where it indicated a number of the major shotgun ammunition producers had conducted their own testing. Without a doubt barrel length has "zero" to do with shot patterning. As Terry said, it is about choke restrictions relative to the type of ammunition. Only when barrels were 19 inches and under did it become a factor.
I tend to listen to ballisticians conducting controlled testing as opposed to just throwing lead at a piece of paper in the back forty then making all encompassing statements. :bang:

You will find that gun is drilled and tapped for a scope rail. You can order it from Remington as I have it on mine.
