ok, i will check it out and see if i can get another mod to help out with the contest, lets get everyone to sign up if they want to be a part of a team turkey hunting contest. I will close down the sign up on or close to April 1st and update as to whether this is going to happen and what the rules are going to be. When you sign up, throw your comments down as to how it can be scored or any other suggestions |

I'm in. So is Deb. We should allow for non-resident birds. If we do a team approach what are we focusing on? We have had a good contest with the picture and story thingy and then a member poll but the team concept can be really fun and promote some great discussion like it did with the team deer contest.

The Team deer contest went very well and gave all the members a chance to get to know other members on the board on a more personal level.I think it would be a great idea. |

I'm in Ian use the FROW scoring for a bird .. pretty easy with no weight and if you shot it with a bow multiply by 1.20 or something Should be fun |

I'm in for the contest..........no idea how turkeys are scored so no comment there but i agree that nonres. turks should be allowed in the contest. The deer team contest was a hoot. maybe the teams should be smaller as i think there will be less turkey hunters than deer hunters. the thought about timing the points by 1.20 for a bow kill sounds like a great idea also. my unit (54) is getting it's first season this spring so I'm full of optimism(maybe get humbled though ) still consider myself very much a greenhorn when it comes to turkey. but at least with my area opening up i'll be able to spend more than a weekend at it. lots of turks around I also will donate a prize........... Im In, Lets Keep the scoring easy like the deer contest Points system -50 points jake gun -75 points jake bow -100 points tom gun -150 points tom bow. Heres a start for an idea. no FROW coring needed to keep it simple. |

I'm in. I think it should be for Ontario birds only (sorry Renegade and yes I do hunt other areas) . Maybe a bow only part and all other methods part. I like the idea of so many points for different birds. Tom, Jake or Bearded hen. If you go by spur size, beard length, weight etc. are pics with tape measures and scales required. In the end I don't really care any type of contest would be cool. Let the trash talking commence. |

Im in for sure. I think we should somehow distiguish between typical vs non typical somewhere, mainly because a small non typical will out score a monster typical if their categorized together. Also like the deer contest a Tom should be worth more than a Jake and Archery more than a rifle. Just my opinion. |

Dumb question and a thought. With a simple scoring system (points per bird) isn't there a danger you could have a bunch of ties *or* have the results skewed by the team with the most tags? My understanding of Turkey hunting (limited though it may be) is that as the season progresses, it gets tougher. Could you "weight" the points alloted per bird such that as the season progresses the points increase. Weeks 1 and 2. Base points per bird Weeks 3 and 4. base + bonus Restt of the season Base + more bonus points. Sort of rewards those who get off to a bad start ( a chance to catch up), and might make the final days more interesting, especially if people have tags to fill. |

I will play as well. If we go with the team method, maybe have a set number of archers and firearm hunters per team if possible. This way with the added points per kill it will make it fair, like in the deer contest. Maybe 3 people per team. PS--If I am placed on a team we will have to have 4 members,I feel as though I will handicap the teammates

Maybe we should do a poll on the format for this contest. We have a lot of great ideas thrown around here. We do have a lot of non-resident members and it would be nice to include them somehow. It adds to the spice of the forum. I like the points breakdown but see no harm in some type of extra points for exceptional birds however you want to measure them. I figure spurs are the only really good indicator of age. What about crossbow or ML? Points system. 10 points for a legal bird. Allowed two in the season. Add: 5 points for a TOM. 4 points for a Bow harvest 2 points for a X-Bow harvest 2 points for spurs greater than 1" (measuring tape in pic) 4 points for spurs greater than 1.25" (measuring tape in pic) 6 points for spurs greater than 1.5" (measuring tape in pic) Spur length based on longest spur So if you used archery equipment and harvest a bird with 1 1/8 and .75 inch spurs and it was a Tom you would score: 10+5+4+2=21 points That's my 2 cents. |
