Hi guys.. I'm planning on hunting with my father when he gets home from out west for the last week or so of the season. I have about a 200 acre farm that consists of plowed under corn fields and cedar bush. I'm scouting it this weekend and hopefully can hang a couple tree stands or even construct a make shift ground blind. What should I be looking for ? Should I just be looking to set up the major trails I find (if any I hope), If I find bedding areas should I be setting up close or far from them ? Any help would be appreciated, I'd like to get my father shooting at a nice buck since he's mist the whole season due to work in alberta. Should I be considering using corn as a bait ? <_<

Good questions. In my opinion, the first thing you need to do is make sure he's going to be warm enough. Check the weather forecast, it will influence your choice on stands. If it's going to be cold and/or windy, you may want to consider a ground blind. If he can handle the weather, a stand of some kind is an option. I've always marvelled at how deer in different areas react differently to certain foods. I hunt a couple of places where deer love apples and have no interest in any kind of corn. I also hunt an area around my cottage where the deer refuse to touch apples and will only go for corn. So your choice of bait will depend on what you've found works best for that area. Scouting is also key, especially if you're going to focus on getting him a nice buck.
I'd find a suitable spot near a trail preferably close to, or in, heavy cover, and start putting out food. You should notice a signifigant increase in deer traffic within a day or two. If not, you may wish to try another location.

Good luck

setting up to watch a deer trail is never a bad idea, maybe throw some apples and corn out and find out wich they like best and focuse on that area
