Hey Gang,

It is with great sadness that I write this as Thursday I had to put my best friend and hunting companion to sleep forever. I can honestly say while Diesel was not perfect I have never ever had a dog that was so loyal to me. I would leave the house to go to work and he would mope around the house until the moment I got back. He would always greet me at the door with a huge kiss and hug.

Unfortunately this is where the loyalies ended. Ever since he was 2 I struggled with an agression issues. For some reason as soon as my wife became pregnant with our child he became very agressive with her. I had tried everything in my power to get him over this and I thought I had it solved until a couple of weeks ago when he starting to become increasingly agressive twards her again. I have spent the last week trying to get him "back in line" but as you can tell I failed. I can't help but feel that I failed him and I am taking this very hard. I know I did the right thing as I could never live with myself if he turned on my son but that does not make this any easier, he was my buddy and I loved him.

So yesterday I wanted to go out and spend one last day with my buddy. I took him to the lake swimming and did alot of fun bumper's together before him and I went for his final ride together.

I have had labs all my life but I never had one with such an intence desire to retrieve until him. He is the dog that got me interested in Hunt Tests and Field trials. Diesel will be sorely missed by my family, my 9 month old boy loved him so dearly.

While he is gone, He will be remembered forever

I Loved You Best

So this is where we part, My Friend,
and you'll run on, around the bend,
gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you'll surely find.
I will go on, I'll find the strength,
life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave,
share one last look, before I grieve.
There are others, that much is true,
but they be they, and they aren't you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
will remember well all you've taught.
Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,
the fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
take with you this...I loved you best

Well in an effort to gain some closure and to speed along the greving process we went out today and put a cross where we laid him to rest. Here is a picture of Mercedes and I....

:( hope this helps you out. i had a lab for 6 years . i trained her and duck hunted over her since she was 6 months old. the way it sounds it could have been a sister to yours. it was so loyal that it was hard to describe and she would die trying to please me. she bit (nipped)the neighbors child when she was 5 and started growling at small children. she wouldn't be aggressive as she knew that was wrong but couldn't help but growl and her hair would stand up on her back whenever a small child would approach her. i couldn't figure out what the problem was. then one day i came home for lunch and some kids were throwing rocks at her and yelling. she was on her chain outside barking and growling. i chased the kids away and tried to calm her down but the damage was done . well she bit the other neighbors young daughter( again it was more of a nip than a bite but she was showing aggression)about 2 months after that. i called my friend who was a vet and he advised putting her down. i knew what i had to do and that same day she was put down. on the way to the vets on her final day that dog ate more chocolate than she ever dreamed i would give her. i can honestly say that the hardest thing i've ever had to do was hand that leash to the vet knowing that this was goodbye. i felt i was betraying my best friend. i talked to the vet to see if there was something i could have done to correct this and he said no. she associated little kids with being tormented and she would eventually hurt some child. it was very unfair to my dog but i could never look a parent or child in the face after my dog scarred them for life and explain i wasn't big enough to do what i had to. like you i took it personally until i finally realized that dogs like other animals react on instinct. something triggered your dog into being aggressive and it's nothing you did or could identify. i just wanted to let you know you did the right thing as this aggression wasn't going to go away. it's nothing you did. sometimes life isn't fair and you have to do what is right even if it kills you to do it. good luck and it heals with time.

Thanks Guys,

While I know I did the right thing it still has been very painfull for my wife and I , even my 11 month old pup is missing him terribly. By far the hardest thing I have ever had to do is take him into that room. There was no way I could just walk away from my best buddy so I stayed with him thru the whole thing.

Afterwards I took his body out to my parents farm and laid him to rest under a nice tree that was overlooking a small pond.

He will be missed , I have never had such an loving dog and I know it will be a lonely waterfowl season. The goose fields and duck blinds will not be the same.

Both NatV and myself offer sincere condolences, Drew. I know how difficult this can be, expecially when you have to make the final call.

I have trained and worked with many aggressive dogs here in Ottawa and have developed quite a reputation for it in the training community. I do believe you made the right choice. There are times when we just don't have the power to help.

Our hearts and prayers are with you.

Wow....... Drew. Words fail me. I wish I could give you a hug. I am so very sorry for the huge emptiness you are walking around with right now. Diesel will live on in your heart and in all that you two did together.

take care.
