Two years ago,I noticed a truck stuck in one of the run off furl on my property.I pulled him out and asked what he was doing on my property. He told me about the grant programs for foresting properties. I filed the papers and during the spring last year they planted two acres of trees and lined the property with cedar trees. I applied for two more grants in November for this year. I received a call last week. They want to plant 40 acres of trees between this spring and next spring, .Around 28,000 trees. This year they have 41 different varieties of trees.I been planning the land scape and the trees are going to supply food for the deer and birds .The perimeter of the property will consist on one row of cedars than six rows of pines. The trees are being arranged according to size to produce a cascade of colours in the fall.In all I'll have three bedding areas for the deer.I'm leaving 10 acres for my food plots that I'll be able to watch from the kitchen window .Things are starting to come together.Brent J..

Thanks for the link,Crisop, but I couldn't load it with the dial up.I'll try again later.Taxman i need your help, lol. Rene,i'm not sure about your area.I'd try the county or city hall. The forestry department should have any available info.Their's about 26 charity orgination across Ontario. The restoration pojects come under,"Clean water-Green Space initiative". Get all the facts up front.I've been looking into programs for the past 12 years. At one point was I was going to order trees from ERCA.I had to pay for the application, buy the trees than prepare the area and get eveything planted in one day.Boyscouts and cubs were the best choice to do all the planting(cheapest). The only thing ERCA restricted the selling of any trees for 10 years. The program I have. They pay for all the trees, preparation of the land, planting of the trees by machines and two years of spraying for weeds.I'm allowed to thin the trees out later and sell them off. Here's a link to Essex county. www.erca.org.It might help you out.Brent J.. |

I just got home from my meeting. It's a go. .They loved my plan and are going to show case my property down the road. The Restoration Biologist is going to plan the planting to get the layer effect and determine the exact number of trees. Their going to plant about 600 trees /acre.The evergreens will be planted thicker. They like to have about 360 trees/ acre, so I'll have to thin them in the future .Their going to incorporate a three year guarantee on all the trees and spray for three years.Usually this cost more.Their's even an program for taxes.Farm land taxes are 25% of forested areas.I'll get the 75% reduction .I don't care if they close our plant in three years.I'm ready to retire.Brent J..

We just finish our meeting. It lasted 2.5 hours.Their planting black cherry, plums and a few other types of fruit trees. This is probably the hardest project they had so far. It's all mapped out in different blocks.I should have some sketches to add shortly. Their seeding the property in an alfalfa and clover mix prior to planting the trees.I'll have 51 acres to mow March 6 I'm enrolled in a tree workshop.Brent j.. |

The green area are just the pines and cedars, Area B1,B2,B3 and G consist of shrubs and small trees to 10 feet, medium side trees next, than larger trees at the sides. Most of the trees are fruit bearing. The open two acre parcel is for food plots.Area C consist of small and medium size trees.Area A2 next to the 40 acres is 120 feet wide and 1,040 feet long. This should supply a great wind break so the deer will bed in the existing hard woods during the winter months. Today,I added dimensions to the drawing and directions for planting.Their's over 20,000 trees so thier will lots of cover and food. ![]() I hope the picture clarifies what I'm saying. The area to the right was planted last year.Brent J.. |

Sorry Mike. The pond (220' by 120'by 8') is deep enough for fish. The birds have brought in fish but I don't know kind they are???My neighbour to the east of my property has 15 year old bass.I'm allowed to go over and catch some and put them into the pond.I never bother before because of the crops. Chris, I'm thinking and hoping they will bed in the three areas and possibly all five ever green areas. They look small, but are really large. One thing their's lots and lots of food.Brent J.. |

What a day, lol.I staked out the front area for the pines, red maples and tulip trees and made a sketch.Once It dries up, I have the sandy loam brought in than a backhoe to dig all the holes.I don't have any more stakes so tomorrow,I just measure the areas around the pond for the stag horn sumac.Than a meeting with the biologist.Friday my tree order goes in. .Brent J..

The JOHN DEER minny shovel arrived yesterday evening.I manged to dig about 20 holes and loaded the clay into the gator.I dumped it around the foundation. This job like anything is growing each day.I decided to dig another 175 holes for the other tuliptrees.Move some rose of sharon and maples.Dig a trench from the down spout to the cistern to get free water. I did a search on most of the trees and shrubs and learned some interesting facts. The buttonbrush is great food for duck and birds. All the dogwoods are food for birds, than the deer love to browse them in the winter. It's actually good for the shrubs. The black berries are great for jams and are used to flavour brandy and whiskey.A lot of my trees are used for landscaping properties.Brent |
