I'm interested in trying to create small 1-2 acre plots here in the northern Ontario area. Creating a plot from a scratch in a wooded lot is tough with bare hands and an ATV but I"m determined! Does anyone out there have an idea where I can get a Disc implement to haul behind my ATV?? I'd be interested in buying a used one also. Plus, any tips on making a plot in the northland? I'm open to advice... |

I'm sure you will get some good responses. I am also interested in learning some food plotting methods for rugged NW Ontario areas. Here is a link to some discussion a while back here John. Disc ATV and plots Where can someone look for ATV add ons for plotting and is it worth it to buy in the U.S. with the dollar?

I'm not to much on atv equipment but i know some about farm machinery. I was thinking why not go at a farm sale and buy a 10' offset disks and take the cutting torch and cut it down so the atv could pull it. A set of old horse drawn disks could be easily modified to work. |

Good topic. I also want to make a small foodplot up at the deer camp and an atv attachment would be great. |

Trapper Check out the grounhog by tufline. Basspro has them listed. Looks like it could do the job you are looking for. Rick http://www.monroetufline.com/pdf/Groundhog.pdf |

Trapper John, I think Member Slim had one for sale not long ago that hooks up to an ATV, but I'm not sure if he still has it. Send him a pm and check him out.

Now that's what I need right there to do my plot area on my woodlot. Anything bigger and heavier would likely get broken in there. I'll have to price them. It will beat doing it by hand, that's for sure. Thanks Rick!

Just checked out the price and it's a bit too expensive for me right now. Seeing that I won't be using it there anymore, I could always cut down the tractor unit I have at my uncle's in Quebec and just make something like that out of it. |

I know the fella at Saugeen shaft's in peterboro rent's a plot mule or atleast he did....does it have to be disc's??....my plan is to get a old set of drag harrow's...the type i'm thinking about usually connect's together in 4' section's...i'm thinking one section and just add some weight..drag it around..... i'm hoping this will break up atleast the top 2-3 inches...do ya think it will need to be broke up more than that???...I guess the deeper ya go the better for the root base..hummm.....not totally sure but i believe Artic Cat makes quite a few different implements for their ATV'S....... Yeah, There are places that rent them. Gobble 'N Grunt had a Plot Mule you could rent as well, but that was last year. I know he was looking to sell it, so not sure if he still has it. A set of drag harrows would do the trick for the no plow stuff. The last plots my brother and I did on the woodlot a few years ago, we roughed up the ground by hand with rakes about two inches deep. The turnips and beets need to be a little deeper, I thought so anyway. |

I emailed tufline to find out if they have a dealer in Ontario. I will let you know what I hear. The thing I like about it is the small size and it uses the weight of the 4 wheeler to make it work. Check out the tufline website. I think there might be a video. I also like that it only weighs 40 lbs. Rick |

That's what I really like about it. It's nice and small, simple and only weighs 40 lbs, which is perfect for for where I'm going with it. Too big of a unit would not be practicle for me. |

Hey Mike if you`ve got an old disc I`m sure we could chop it down into one that could be used behind an ATV,I`ve got all the equipment needed to do the job at my autobody shop,I also have a couple of spike tooth harrows at work great behind an ATV. |

Wow, that's a great bunch of information there...thanks! I will check out the plot mule and the tufline for sure. Even at $500 or so, it's a one time investment and between a couple of hunting buddies it's not all that much. The drag harrow idea is OK for farm land or grassy type fields that are being broken up ...but round these parts its going to be busting up the ground after the bush has been cut by chainsaw and brush cutter...so starting from scratch! Lots of roots and stumps and rocks I suspect. But going to give it a try anyway. |

I HAVE a tufline disc. It's not for sale and at the time it cost over $1000. I believe that Bass Pro price is in US funds. I got it through a local farm dealership. get a friend or hunt group split the cost and all involved plant food plots |

I will also add that the Toronto Bass Pro doesn't get them shipped in. So you either have to go for a drive to the states or find a local dealer |

check out powerseeds.ca and talk to Ryan. bought one from him in Jan. He is discounting them to get rid of them. He has some in stock in Peterborough. He has the summit models. I have not tried mine, but looks very heavy duty and rugged. Mine weighs over 500lbs. I called a local dealer about the tufline and they were quite a bit more expensive. |

Sure it is, Terry. We pulled out a 1300# bull (whole) with my father's older 1992 Big Bear 350. We did have two guys sitting on the front rack to keep the front end down, but I can't see you having to add weight to the front as it is hooked up to your hitch. |

If you have the option of buying the same unit but they weigh different amounts, save the money and get the lighter one. Rocks are free and it's very easy to strap them to the top of the disc or make a basket to mount on the top of the disc and fill it up. That's what I did. |

I was looking at that unit and it doesn't look like it would be hard to fabricate. All you need is an old disc, a good set of torches, an arc welder and you're off to the races. |
