I'm curious how many members have or will have food plots of any sort in 2011. Thinking we could form some sort of group. I will be doing plotting this years so I'll start things off: I'll add names to the list as we go. What we can do with it I have no idea but maybe we can come up with some ideas in that regard. Strength in numbers. 1) Renegade 2) Kemble Mountain 3) double lung 4) Borpheous 86 5) April Dawn 6) Bad Dog 7) tizbass 8) Archer Ontario 9) q12 10) buckhuntingobsessed 11) BigR 12) Buckstop 13) fairchase 14) warningshot 15) WLK 16) Jeff Faust 17) wilebski 18) Friggs 19) okplotz 20) swampdogger 21) TimH 22) Morel_hunter 23) vetjudy 24) baydog

I will be doing some plots this year for sure. Hope to get a little TSI done this march and frost seed some clover into a few plots to bring up the Nitrogen levels. Also putting in 6 to ten mor apple trees. Later in May we'll be planting some soya beans. Late summer put in a small plot of turnips

I am not sure what this consists of,but you guys sure are not getting much from me I dont know the first thing about plots.Throwing down some grass seed on some bare spots is simple but growing a healthy foodplot reallly perks my interest.Id be interesting in joining if you guys would take a newbie in,going to try my hand at a small one this year, something that will last into the full season.I gotta draw the deer away from the other sites on the property

Hi fairchase. We will try to help you out. Couple questions first. What time of year will you be hunting your plots the most? What type of soil (sandy, clay, nice fertile black dirt, etc.) Did you check the ph of the soil at all? Do you have access to large equipment or will you be using a wheeler or hand tools. We'll wait to hear from you and let you know what we think would work best for you. Thanks for asking!

I have been foodplotting for about a decade. I have around 6 acres scattered about in small plots on my property, mostly old logging landings. I soil test then lime and fert accordingly, plant Buckwheat the first year, then when my ph gets over 6, I go with ladino clover and some plots have brassica. My property is located in the middle of a heavily forested region with no agriculture within 15 miles. |

I will be putting in a couple of acres. I have for the last couple of years. Not really knowing what I'm doing other than putting down fertilizer and seed. The first year I had wheat, the next clover and last year just a mixture, which the turkeys destroyed, This sounds like a great learning forum. Thanks

I have planted 2 year's in a row, i have used a product that is sold in store's, but i have had enough of planting turnip's. The crop i had produced no pic's of deer feeding in them. The mineral's i placed in the foodplot produced lot's of pic's. So' if anyone has anysugestion's on what to plant other than turnip's, i'm listening. Thank's.

There's two question's you need to ask yourself in my opinion. First, Is If you just want a kill plot& what time of fall are you going to hunt? Secondly, if you are planning on developing a food plot program , that is a whole new ball game. More time& money and sufficient planting area. |

Yeah, I've been doing it a while and have learned alot. Much of what I've learned has been through trial and error. I now know what my thin poor soils will produce and stick with those plantings. I started with ph levels around 4.5 and now have them up over 6, plus through the years I've built up the soil a little. Don't have any good photos but am going to re-do several plots this spring, so I'll take some photos of my process. I'd probably be further ahead saving the money I spend foodplotting and go on a good hunt every 3 or 4 years, but I enjoy doing it.

If your shot plot is brassica's then WAIT !!!!!! You want to plant them as late as possible or 7 weeks before the first frost in your area. With brassica's you want nitrogen. If your horny to plant ,,, a good thing to plant for now is cheep red clover. What ever you get up will be eaten by the deer and can be tilled under for a green fertalizer and then plant your brassica. ( Shot Plot ) Grow the red clover now ,,,, till under and plant your shot plot. or ,,, Plant the brassicas in ( my area North Bay ) First week in Augest. Fert as directed |

hmmm very interesting! decisions decisions lol im really not that horny to plant but i never thought of planting clover and then the shot plot (which is forage rape and turnip brassica) and when u mean till the clover then plant the shot plot i would need a tiller im assuming a disc would not do the same as what a tiller would do? as for the fert just use whats directed to use on the package? this is all new to me thanks very much for the help! |

I think clover seeds are small enough for you to just level after seeding. We usually level with a roller or a light drag of fencing or harrows. Make sure its dry enough for seeding,,,, Seed into earth ,, not mud. Waiting a few more weeks wont hurt.

Not yet,,, You can order them but you will pay an extra $100 roughly for shipping because they have to go UPS> BUT,,,,, If you have or can get a P.O. box across the boarder then you can get them shipped to there for like ,,,,, $20 and pick them up yourself. You can however get field peas here for like $25 for around 50lbs of seed. It dosn't grow tall but , I'm going to try it. Mix it with soy beans or rye. Field peas need something or like something to climb up on. Last time I talked to Eagle they had a product that was more of a feild pea anyway that we had no issues getting here. I have been told the field peas will stay green , longer into the cold season then soya beans. |

bigr, soud's like an idea, are pea folage sweet to a deers taste? I have been thinking something that is sweet tasting(mineral pole has smething to do with that)why not plant Collards green with it , its tall and will be there in Feb. Oh boy, this plot thing could get the best of ya , if you let it. I am laid up for a bit , due to BIG,BAD, KNEE, and research on plot's is about all i am allowed to do until this knee thing is dealt with. Anyway, lot's of thing's to plant, just got to find the seed in Ontario. LOL Rick.
