Thanks Renegade have been using the deer cane mixes. Will give your recipe a try. Looks like I will be putting out many more mineral licks for the same price

Now is the time to think about your mineral sites. Stocking them now will ensure the deer smash them in the spring when they need it the most!

I still have some under the snow from this past summer. I was thinking of refreshing it in April. You do yours now Rene?

I have done up most of them. I spread some dical phosphate and trace mineral salt with vitamins A D and E in most of my main mineral stations.

Put out a block of trace minerals at one site this afternoon. The co op didn't have the bags of loose trace salt. I'll have to wait until spring to mix up a batch. Used the dical mix the last two years in the same spot, so there should be lots in the soil anyway.

I've looked high and low, they don't sell them Rocks around here. I picked up the homemade stuff this fall and put some out at the beginning of October for next season.

Do you deliver? If so, I'll also take a large pizza and a 6 pack of bud.

I'm okay for now Bri, I have 100kg of the homemade mineral mix and I'll try it out this spring.

If your blocks are working for you I would stick with them. I paid $70 for those 4 bags with a $10 off coupon I had for Richie Feed and Seed in Ottawa. It gives me 100kg (25 of it is molasses) so it's a lot of product but most of the youtube video's claim it will cost you under $50. Maybe at the feed stores in the US but not up here.

I still use salt blocks myself but I supplement with dicalcium phosphate and trace mineral mixes. Not perfect but it isn't easy to find all the ingredients in Canada. $50 is definately US prices.

Yep, 2 bags of salt, 1 bag of calcium for bone growth and the molasses is used to bring them in I think. It does smell sweet and nice. I checked all over Ottawa and stores that use to sell the trophy rock told me I have to go to Bass Pro in Toronto.

I try this mixture in the next year and see how it works. Lots of guys here said it worked for them. If you're ever coming to Ottawa let me know ahead of time Bri and I'll get you to pick me up a trophy rock and I'll try it. I always keep cold beer in my fridge Bud.

Really? I didn't think they would touch it in the winter. Anybody else seeing their mineral sites getting hit in the winter?

When I set some mineral salts out on Dec. 28th some deer had been digging at the snow to get at the lick.

Hi... I use the Mineral Blocks on my foodplots. I normally put one out at each of my plots in late April or Early May.

I also mix my own & use a mix of Rock Salt with Egg Shells that I put through an Old Coffee Grinder. HINT... It's NOT a good idea to use the wifes food kitchen unit. So you might want to pick something up at a Yardsale.

I've also used Mussel or Clam Shells. The whole idea is to get the Bucks to have some Calicum in their diet, early in the Season. I boil ALL the shells before grinding them for a few minutes. Just to be sure they are clean of anything that could make the Deer sick. The deer are not the only thing in the bush that likes this mix. I've had Bear, Moose, Coons, Fox & of course the Porcupines like anything with the Salt.

Hope this helps.... Fireguy
