So I talked to my local seed supplier, Purity seeds in Emo. http://www.purityseeds.com/ Here is the mixture I am going with in a 5 acre field, the following is the amount of seed per acre: trefoil 2lb white clover 2lb response alfalfa 6lb redclover dc 2lb ladino clover 2lb express timothy 2lb For my small little bush plots that total about a acre I am going to use the above mixture and add purple top turnips and something called beets and sweets. Got a brillion seeder lined up. The field is ready to go but just have to wait for some drying of the field and the small plots need a little more disc and harrow work.

Renegade, have you had luck with trefoil in the past? I planted some about 5 yrs ago and it took forever to establish in a perennial plot. Last year I nuked the plot after letting it go way too long. It was mostly white clover and weeds with some trefoil. Well, everything but the trefoil was killed and afterwards it took off like gangbusters. The nice thing about it is it seems to stay nice and green during dry periods compared to clover. Other than during these periods though, I don't find it gets browsed very hard compared to the other legumes. Let me know how you make out with it. |

Trefiol is a filler in a seed mix IMOP. Same as rye grass. Planted both. |

I guess another reason I'm not going to use it much anymore is because I've been rotating crops a lot more than I used to. I've been using red clover in my annual mixes and plowing it down the next year to add nitrogen. The few times I planted trefoil, it took quite a while to establish. Even my perennial plots, I've just been mixing red and white clover and leaving out the trefoil. I might try chicory as an alternative to see if the deer prefer it over trefoil. It's supposed to be fairly drought tolerant as well. |
