Been doing some reading and understand that Brassica is a good first year plot seed? I understand it is good to kill off existing weeds and will grow plentiful.I am planting on Saturday this week and hopefully things go as planned with the growing process Now,How much is Brassica per pound? Turnip or rape,Whats best? I will take pics of the plot this weekend and keep the pics coming as the plot is growing. First time plot,a little excited as to how its going to pan out

Dwarf essex rape seed is around $1.60 per pound at parsons seeds near beeton. I'm also mixing that with Diakon radish for my brassica plot. With brassica you really wanna time the frost with a 60 day maturing plant . You want it to frost before going to seed. Im not sure how much to put per acre but a guy i know plants brassicas in his plots each year and the deer love them and the times i have hunted his property their are highways coming to the brassica. Should work well for you! as for the weeds they work pretty good at keeping them under control |

Just planted my brassias last week. I planted two 1/2 acre fields. One with rape and the other with turnips and sugar beets. Rape and turnips have been working very well for me. I n fact the deer around here start hammering both before the first frost (the tops) Bigr is right in saying that you should try to time it with the first frost but I have had good luck in Aug?Sept before and after a hard frost. They will come back later in the fall and winter and eat the turnip bulbs. This is the first year I tried sugar beets so I have no report on those but will let you know this fall as to how the deer liked them. |

Thank you for the info guys, much appreciated. I was reading some of the link that bigr added and its a very informative site I am thinking purple Top Turnips and Dwarf essex rape? Purple top Turnip requires 80-90 days for maximum production so I figure if planted now I should have a good crop by Oct 1 bow opener? Can both these Brassicas be mixed together in a pail and planted in the same plot without one taking over the other. The purple top turnip roots deep in hard soil,I only got about 6" of good top soil as I was raking with the tractor, hasnt been tilled. Both these seeds sound very affordable compaired to mixed bags of the Whitetail variety. Thoughts on anything else I can try, providing the seeds I need are not available in my local seed store

On another note,How deep can I put the seed and whats the best way to spread the seed? I was going to make the tire trick for my bike, small Leg bolts in it for raking and spreading. Can I just put the seed on the surface and take one run over it to bury the seed? |

Something that works well is dragging a section of fenceing behind the bike. Here is our fence ,,, nothing special but it works. ![]() Spread the seed with a hand spreader and drag the fence a few times to work seeds and soil as well as fertalizer together. Seed to soil contact is fine IMOP , use dbltrees rates of fertalizer and you should be fine. PS wet soil is not good for planting brassicas from what I have seen. |

You can mix the seed together with good results. I always plant them separately just so I can watch and see which the deer seem to prefer. The tire will work fine to scratch up the soil . I prefer to disk it up with bigger equipment to get a deeper soil base and then do the rest of the work with my wheeler and drag . The best way to plant is like bigr said. Go over the seed once or twice with a drag of some sort. If you have a soil compactor/roller it really helps for your seed to soil germination but you can get away without it. GOOD LUCK! |
