Well hopefully that will be the case-lol
Finally got my plot seeded this late afternoon, was going to plant it this morning but was to tired to head out coming off a midnight shift.
Decided to go with Red Top Turnips. Was thinking on Radish but my seed suplier dosnt carry them, hopefully next year he said.
Been alot of work getting the plot from start to finish and HOT,The deer flies were unbearable at times as well.
Here are some pics of the plot, used to be a hay field-lol-bush hoged the grass down, then ran a farm harrow over the soil for a while to break up the grass and roots.Last sunday I spent the morning in the 35C weather and Rototilled the whole plot out and raked up most of the grass, sod and roots that I could.

This is the plot after roto tilling abd raking by hand.

Posted Image
Here my son Hunter and his girlfriend are raking in the fertilizer with my homemaid rake-lol-
Posted Image
Posted Image
After raking the soil for the last time I seeded the plot with 5LBS of Turnip.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Packed the seed down with my bike and called it a night :D

Oh,and I also had a visitor walk through the plot into the corner as well
Posted Image

I am a little excited in this plot as its the first one I have done, keeping my fingers crossed that the seeds take and it come in full. Will keep everyone updated on the growing process.
Would like to thank everyone for all the pointers and tips that have been provided in this section

All I have to say is it looks like you did it right IMOP. Seed to soil contact should be great in that dirt !!! :hick:

I am not sure if 5 pounds was to much or not, very hard seed to put down evenly. The seed is so small I couldent see it coming out of the hand held spreader.I do know however that the plot is covered and fertilized, just hoping for a little rain now to get things going

Great looking plot you have going there! Isn't it a little early for turnips? I always though they should be planted 4 to 6 weeks before the first frost. How close is your stand? Will this plot be for archery or rifle hunting? You must have sweated buckets in that hot weather we've been having. I wish you the best of luck with your plot!

George

I was reading up on some sites and the link that Bigr provided on the Brassica post made here in this section and its said that Purple Top Turnips will reach maximum production levels in 80-90 days.I wanted to make sure the plot was in now or by the 1st week of august as our First big frost is normally a hit or miss here in ontario. The turnip should be at full levels by October and hopefully get a good frost to sweeten the leaves as the deer love them.I just figured that a little early is better then late, especially not knowing how they are going to turn out in the plot-lol-Even if the deer eat the premature leaves it will still grow and they will start digging up the turnip once the temperature drops.I am just keeping my fingers crossed that the plot turns out thick and healthy.
Yes,the property that the plot is planted on is for archery only and my stand is about 10-15 yards off the one corner. You will see in the pics that the deer normally come from the far end of the field or out of the corner where the fence has a little opening. When the wind is just right its a great stand to be sitting in.
Sweating is an understatment-lol-Sunday almost killed me with the tilling and raking, forgot my water at home and by the time I returned to the house at 12:30,I was in pretty rough shape,Water and a shower fixed that though.
Using this stand for archery hunting and feeding the deer with what they need to go into a winter here is why I made it,It will be a win win for both myself and the deer.
Thanks for the kind words george and I hope I answered your questions.I am learning alot and this site with the knowlegeable members is making it much easier to understand the hows and benifits of plotting

Extreme, I think you made a good move planting now. I used to plant in early-mid august for brassicas, and believe that they could have been better if I planted earlier. So, I planted some about 2 weeks ago. We'll see how they do but I'm quite a bit further north than you (NW Ontario). I also planted a radish clover mix last weekend in a new 3/4 acre plot, and next weekend will do a radish/rye/clover/pea mix in a 1 acre plot. This will give me a really good idea as to the best time to plant brassica around here. We get a good frost around mid september usually. My brassicas will have been in the ground about 70 days with the first planting and about 50 days with the last.

Good luck Baydog with the crops.Would love to see some pics when you have time to take some, its interesting to see everyones plots and how they are turning out in different areas of the province.I am hoping for a little rain here, today hit 38C and its real dry.Hopefully by the weekend the temps will drop back to normal .
I was real interested in the Tillage raddish as I was reading up on all the benifits of planting them, not only for the deer but for the ground and the benifits it creates for the following year.Problem being is we have no feed stores anywhere around here that carries that seed and I dont really want to drive 2-3-4 hours one way for 5 lbs of seed-lol-I am sure the Turnip will be just fine.
Next year we plan on getting a head start on the food plots with the heavy artillery, disc plows etc. Will plant a few different plots of variety, just having fun this year with my first.

UPDATE

Took a drive to the property today to see how my plot was coming along after seeding it 9 days ago.We finally got some rain this week and I was curious as to how it was coming along.
I may have overseeded this spot? It is the lower end and a little more wet there.

Here are some more pics of the complete plot, coming along nicely I think :D

Just a fun pic of the deer crossing into the corner as expected
Posted Image

As mentioned in the above posts,This is a very small seed and the first pic demonstrates that.I was using the hand spreader and had the setting to high, the rest of the plot it was turned down to a finer spread.

Went to the plot on Sunday August 7 to check on the plot.Very hot and dry humid weather with no rain for a few weeks.Only had the one rain since the plot has been planted.I think its coming up OK considering the conditions.
Does this look typical of a Turnip plot for the duration its been in or am I worrying to much lol)))
19 days of growth as of August 7

Yesterday, I checked a plot that I planted around the same time as you planted yours. It has forage radish and clover and you have a lot more growth on yours. My plants are only half the size. I think you're going to have a nice plot there. I'd like to see more pics towards the end of the month.

I have a bag of Fertilizer, how do I go abouts spreading this?
I have the understanding that if put in just before a rain it will burn the plants?

Supposed to rain periodically the next 3 days, get it spread in tomorrow before the rain?

Why do a few plants have turnip showing and the majority only have roots?

I think throwing it down before a heavy rain would be best. have you checked your soil ph? I'm pretty sure lack of bulb development is one sign of low ph.
