That is unreal. You must have one heck of a lot of deer in the area, you are providing a lot of food there. Great job Ray! We are all learning a lot from all your efforts plotting and sharing the information you have learned. Thanks.

Ok, Ray, when do you plant the pea's,going with them and radish, maybe bean's. My farm buddy noticed a doe feeding on the cut bean's during muzzle loader season, i did not think they would feed on them after they have died. If the deer don't clean up the bean's i am sure the turkey's will. Come on spring. lol.

I planted the peas at the middle of July , Common #1 peas , but I think I'll go with 4010 peas next year. I believe these are what people call Winter peas. Deer hammered the peas and as Paul Knox calls them ,, deer candy, Ya, Good name for them. They seemed to take a few good frosts but once they were done they were done. I didn't notice deer digging in the plots in November for them "but" , I planted late up here and I didn't get much for pods once the frost started. Up here I want to plant them in mid June next year, but no doubt , They draw deer !!!! I'll plant these over beans any day ! Done both , peas as an attractant , way better as well there seemed to be way more brows then the beans we have done before. Your area might be ok for a mid July planting ? |

Here is a recommended mix from Paul , Winter rye 50-80#'s per acre (56#'s = a bushel) Spring oats 80-120#'s per acre (32#'s = a bushel) Austrian Winter Peas or 4010/6040 Forage peas 20-80#'s per acre Red Clover 8-12#'s per acre or white clover at 6#'s per acre Groundhog Forage Radish 5#'s per acre Good read on why as well. http://www.outreachoutdoors.com/phpBB3/vie....php?f=21&t=505 I think for my needs ' I'd do the clover , Peas and rye for a perennial plot the next 2 years ( Get some green nitro ) then brassica plot again. |
