The elk are totally wiping out all my farming efforts. Does anybody have the same problem? Renegade? How many acres do you need to keep 8-10 elk and 12 deer happy. In the fall my alfalfa was chewed down to the ground, I got about 8 inches of snow, will it come back this spring? should I over seed it? I like the elk but wow can they eat alot. |

I only have 2 acres right now, but I have another 3 acres disced and ready to plant this spring. I would have done more but i had tractor problems. I was thinking of trying to plough and plant another 3 acres if I have no problems this spring. That would give me 8 acres total-hoping thats enough to start with as I don't think i'll be able to do anymore on my schedule, but I will try if I have too. In my province your not allowed to bait, so all crops have to be somewhat marketable and I have to take the crops off if possible. Planting crops like brassicas would be considered bait if I can't use them. Right now I have alfalfa, for which I just bought a baler. I could plant other crops as long as they are harvested. Too many rules, not enough fun. |

Coming from elk country. I believe you have a serious problem. Elk will eat everything and other game animals (deer) will be displaced. I would say don't plant anything and make it uncomfortable for the elk so they leave. You probably won't do that but, elk are a nuisance animal. They take over when they get established. |

We have 4 Elk that frequent our properties as well, and the feed we put out for the deer gets anialated by the elk. They show no mercy for them square bales, and the brand new corn feeder that we had filled with about 200 pounds of corn, didn't stand a chance either once they got their horns around the bottom of it. I love having them there and its more then exciting to have them on camera or have one come up behind you while you are hunting, but they sure change the outcome of which deer come and eat! |

I have 17 acres of old fields that i could plant. Elk in my area are scared of human activity, i have been winter feeding the deer for 2 years directly behind my cabin and the elk have totally stayed away. The fields are at the far end of my property, they are comfortable back there and even bed regularly in the area. They don't go way if i don't plant anything. I was thinking of clearing and planting a field directly behind my cabin and hope they continue to stay away. Sounds like i should plant all 17 acres, and put in the new field. At least I should be able to make some money on the bales, which by regulation is the purpose of planting my fields, not to attract deer, but it is a great side effect. |

Ask the farmers in the Bancroft area. They can tell you what they have found out. |
