I would like to find a co-op in the Sudbury,North Bay, or north shore of lake huron that sells a herbicide called Poast. I planted white clover (one acre) last spring the plot was well maintained always mowed down to six inches well fertilized and the clover is doing great although I would like to eliminate the weeds that still exist to have a 100 % clover field.Would like to get your opinions on spraying herbicides in existing food plots. Thank You and great forum. |

i think you will need to find a chemical supplier for this as you will need a license for this product. |

Chessy's right I believe. Even for bulk Gly (roundup), you need to be a farmer or have a need for forestry purposes. It's quite a joke actually but they've really clamped down the last couple of years. I say a joke because roundup was put on the list and it has low mammalian toxicity and little to no residual effect in the soil. Check out the pesticide reg on Elaws.com. You might fit the criteria of one of the exemptions and be able to get it. |

yes but farmers are only allowed to use pesticides that are licensed for there for instance the best ant and grub control is a granular diazinon, the only ones allowed to purchase it now are famers that grow onions |

Two years ago I took the course and became a certified farmer. With this certificate you can purchase about 95% of most herb. and pesticides in Ontario. All the details are listed here.... http://www.opep.ca/index.cfm Only problem is that most pesticides in Ontario are sold in large quantity and very pricey for the average plotter. I buy some of my stuff in the U.S.A., 2 1/2gal. glyphosate (no- name round-up) $35.00 Friggs |

Is there a certification for farmers? Or do you just mean you got certified for pesticides? I've been borderline on it, I've got a few beehives but I'm not sure I would pass the "pastime or recreation" test because bees are pretty fun and I only produce a few hundred pounds a year. |

To be a certified farmer you must meet the criteria as set out by OPEP... http://www.opep.ca/index.cfm/farmers1/gpsc...on-of-a-farmer/ I make and sell a little maple syrup at the hunt camp so thats how I meet the criteria. Just growing food plots doesn't cut it. Just see what you can do on your property to meet the criteria. Its a one day course and an open book test at the end and will cost you $105.00, pretty easy test when you copy from the book... http://www.opep.ca/index.cfm/farmers1/about-the-gpsc-exam/ Just pick place and date for the course... http://www.opep.ca/index.cfm/farmers1/cour...schedule-dates/ Like I said you can buy class - 1 & 2 Pesticides in Ontario, but most of these pesticides come in large containers and good for farmers or growers who plant large acreage. I think 10 litres of no-name round-up (glyphosate) is around $70.00. I hope this helps, Friggs |

Maybe if you contact the "Pesticide Specialist" at the bottom of this page and ask if Bee keeper meets the criteria. I think if you grow crops (buckwheat, clover...) for Bee's and sell your honey you should be OK. http://www.opep.ca/index.cfm/farmers1/gpsc...on-of-a-farmer/ Friggs |

Hey thanks Friggs, I just called and I do qualify as most of the honey is not for my own consumption. The guy made a very interesting comment regarding maple syrup producers. He said that because it takes the trees 30 years to grow before you can harvest, you'd pass the test intending to harvest maple syrup in the future. |

Not certain if you have ever made maple syrup its a lot of fun and great for getting family and friends together. We use to boil under a tarp so I built a 15'x20' shed with a slant/shed roof for boiling syrup, hanging deer and just hangin out. I tap about 40-50 trees thats all my system can handle and makes about 30-40 litres of syrup a year. I sell a few litres but mostly for family use. http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u213/Fr...up/8756a248.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u213/Fr...ed/_DSC0027.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u213/Fr...10/P1040942.jpg Friggs |

I might get into it in the future, I don't have too much access to maple trees right now though. I prefer honey to syrup too, it was hard to give 100 jars away at our wedding.![]() ![]() ![]() |

Not for roundup unless that changed in the past 6 months. You need to sign a declaration. |

Yes, must have surfactant so it can stick to the foliage and make it work better. Make sure the glyphosate contains surfactant or you have to add it. All Round-up herbicide has surfactant in it but some of the no-name brands don't. Check and read the labels first to make sure it's included. Friggs |
