Thought I'd share a pic of my fall rye planting as it comes out from under winter. I know you guys in the south have been snow free for a while but we've only come out in the last week and half or so. Will all the heat, the rye is looking nice and green right now in comparison to anything else around. I wish I could say I'm seeing tons of deer up there though (behind house) but I'm not. I'm sure there out there at night though. If nothing else it's going to be good plow down when planting season comes around!

I had planned to turn it under and plant something else in spring. I wanted to have something that came up green earlier than anything else around for the spring feed. Would there be any benefits to letting it go to seed? How far along would it be if I left it until mid - late July? Could turn it under then for brassica planting time if there was any benefit. |

spoke too soon --- seen 3 on the rye this morning chowing down for a good 1/2 hour. Good to know they are enjoying it - makes the efforts worth while :) |

i had planted mine with clover in the fall 2010 along a creek bed that had been freshly dug up and in 2011 it returned and i let it go to seed but every seed head stripped clean by deer and other critters ..... when date did u plant it in the fall? |

I think there are benefits to letting it grow to maturity and then plow it under for green manure, I do the same thing. Works great for that. Did you mix red clover in with it when you planted it? If not, you might want to do that next time you plant it. I'm in the same boat as you. The rye is coming back in fields I planted last year and I had mixed red clover in. Good deer food for the Spring and early summer and when it gets turned down organics get put back in the soil and the clover will release nitrogen, so essentially free fertilizer for the next crop which is brassicas. Saves $$ in the long run. In my brassica plots from last year, I'm going to throw some oats and red clover down this spring, plow it down in august and plant a rye/clover/pea/radish mix for the hunt. |

Update! --- it's getting greener by the second and the deer have been hammering this stuff lately. Very happy with the results. I tried winter wheat 2 falls ago and didn't see near the same spring deer action. |
