Charlie Alsheimer is a field editor for deer and deer hunting. At a recent hunting symposium he spoke and described his life as a hunter summarized in these 5 stages. 1 The shooter stage. This is when the hunter begins, they need to have sucess and be able to have a level of accomplishement. 2 The limiting out stage. This stage the hunter's goal is to harvest as many animals as is legally possible. 3 The trophy stage. The hunter begins to selectively choose his quarry, bigger antlers and a keen knowledge of stewarding the whitetail world begins to take center stage in the deer hunter's life at this point. 4 The method stage. By the time a hunter reaches stage 4 he is beginning to mellow out with many autumns under his belt he begins to become more interested in how he hunts. Understanding deer behavior also becomes paramount during this stage. 5 The sportman stage. By the time a hunter hits this stage he truly knows who he is. He knows deer behavior, has killed many deer, has probably become involved in the preservation of hunting and makes a conscious effort to see that hunting is passed on to the next generation. This is also the stage when many deer hunters become involved as managers of their deer hunting properties. I often viewed this stage as the reflective stage. Though all five stages can stand alone, stages three to five can be and often interwoven. As a fifty seven year old I'm able to see this in my life because I'm passionately interested in hunting mature bucks, learning all I can about whitetails managing our farm's deer population and sharing what I've learned with public. These words from Charlie Alsheimer |

Charlie is a wise man indeed. I enjoy his writing very much. I'm not quite as "experienced" as you barr creek but I can agree with you about at least stages 1-3. I'd say I'm somewhere between 3&4 with the occasional weak moment of a stage 2 fellow :) |

You are much to kind deerfarmer my experience keeps growing because of forums like this and with these forums we can all learn from each other, listen to what each other has to say and try to incorporate it within our properties management goals. Charlie Alsheimer Is a very knowledgeable deer manager, I was very dissa pointed when wild tv cancelled Deer and Deer hunting tv show this show touched on everything from food plots to timber stand improvements for deer managing your deer herd etc. It was truly a world of knowledge. And renegade you are absolutely right most of the people in this forum are in stage 4 and 5 because if you are making property improvements in the form of food plots or timber stand improvements you are giving back to the local deer herd and not just taking away. |

I've got a couple of Charlie Alsheimer's books. And yes I agree, Deer and Deer Hunting was one of the best shows on TV and the morons at WILD Tv cancelled it and went with shows like The Dimestore Fisherman and Larry Weishums garbage canned hunt shows. Wow, heaven forbid we have a show that doesn't just feature kill shots. |

Phew........I though I might be the only one who hates Larry's show. "lets just walk in here bit and shot a big buck, Its that easy folks" The dimestore fisherman is the absolute worst.....that guy should give up TV |

I haven't even bothered to watch a whole show of pigman. Watched about 10 minutes and then turned it off. The other one that sucks is Table Mountain. Next point, how do #1's on Charlie's list get there own TV shows? Lol

I respect Larry for his knowledge of animals, but I don't respect hunting on those game preserves. I think Larry will lose a lot of fans like me. I know all hunting and hunters should be encouraged, but this to me is hard to agree with. Hunting should be for wild animals or its strictly farming and harvesting. Free range or nothing. |

Good point trophy. I don't see how any hunter could feel like they are challenging themselves as a hunter hunting these preserves with 10 ft high fences. Yes wild tv does not just have ridiculous shows they also have unethical shows. I guess as long as Helgy and Ryan get their $$$ they probably don't care much. |
