My plan was to plant a mix of soya beans,Iron clay cow peas, sorghum, lab lab and sunflowers in food plot 003 (sample 003). Due to soil test results I have decided to plant this mix in food plot 002 (sample 002) and food plot 001(sample 001). As far as food plot 003 (sample 003) for warm season food plot I was thinking a mix red clover and buckwheat and was thinking with the application of lime and fertilizers I wanted to plant a fall mix of brassicas and purple top turnips is this feasible or should I slowly build up the soil and put this off till next year. Need advice on fertilizer and lime applications for food plot 003(sampl 003).![]() ![]()

What is the acreage of each of these three plots ? What is the history of these plots ? were they planted before, old hayfields or newly cleared plots ? From all three soil reports they are all low in NPK and I'm not certain how much money are you willing to spend on fertilizer, amendments and seed. This could be costly if these are large plots. Basically, the recommendations on the soil tests are for higher yields and for food plots you could get away with apply 25%-50% less P&K. Plot 001 has the best PH and requires no liming. Plots 002 might not require lime depending on what you plant. If you decide to lime either 002 or 003 make sure you use an ag-lime and not dolomitic lime which has magnesium which they both don't need. Sorghum or Milo which need around 6.0 to 6.5PH and require 80-100lbs/ac of nitrogen along with 50-100 lbs/ac of P&K. Sorghum is similar to corn and require lots of nitrogen. Buckwheat should be planted alone or used in smaller amounts in a mix. It grows quickly and requires little nutrients and would probably smother out anything else if planted at 50 lbs/ac. or more. Buckwheat is great for amending soil and killing weeds. |

Thanks friggs for the reply, plot 001 is an old trail 5yds wide by 130 yds long , plot 002 is a circular plot 40yds diameter and plot 003 is 1/3 acre . All three plots are first time plots they all will receive plenty of sun and all three have been scarified using the blade on a skidder to expose soil. The rest of food plot work will be done using atv disc and spike thooth harrow. Although small, plot 001,002 will have an electric fencing to allow a sustainable yield in growth. These plots will not be planted until soil temp reaches 65 degrees fahrenheit which is the ideal temp for soya beans germination rate of 80%. |
