I have never heard of it, and as much as i hate to , i think i am going to buy a bucket of seed with a deer pic on it. I get a little tired of talking to seed supplier's who don't know what i am talk'n about. And for the sake of a 1 to 2 acre food plot, i think i will bite the bullet. lol. :hick: :driving:

Nitro radish is a brand name for Daikon radish. It's the stuff I use. It's good seed.

Thanks for the info guys :) I might go buy a couple more pounds of it now that I know it's the same stuff and it's the only radish seed I've been able to find. :allright:

I got about 2ft of growth on the tops before they got mowed down by deer. I had a picture of my 5 yr old son standing in them and you can only see him from the shoulders up but I can't seem to locate it. I was surprised that some of the roots grew up to 10-12" because I'm in heavy clay soil. Definitely recommend the Daikon in whatever brand you can find.

Found the pic of my son in the brassicas. I planted a bit too early as some of the radish went to seed, but it still all got wiped out.:

It depends when you want them to mature but they say 30-60 days before the first frost for maximum forage production. I planted the ones in the picture and tried to hit it right for the hunting season. I planted the last week of June/first week of July and they were a bit too mature by September. I'll probably move it up to the second week of July this year and continue to experiment. This should give them 45-60 days of growth before the first good frost hits. Sometimes it's hard to judge here in TBay because we can either get really nice weather or early kill frosts.
Sounds like the guy at the co op is giving advice not with food plots in mind when he gave you those dates?? If you plant in May, they'll seed out in July likely.

did they go for the roots at all or just the tops?....mine only went for the tops and my plot was done before hunting season..my planting date was mid july..may go a week or so earlier here....

Well, they ate all the tops and most of the roots later on. There is a few roots left but quite a few got pulled and gnawed on. Interestingly enough, the bears didn't seem to bother them, just the deer. So, you're going to plant the first week of July? Where are you located? I'm going to push my planting date back a week just to experiment. Probably around the same time you plant.

I should add that I mixed rape and stubble turnip with mine as well. They nail the radish first and hit the other brassicas later in the year. Seems to work well, but by far, the preferred food is the daikon. They hammered it. I had 3/4 acre planted last year but will be bumping it up to an acre and a half or so this year.

How big of an area? If you're planting it alone, about 8-10lbs per acre. You might want to think of a mix though, as the radish will go fast once the deer start on it. I use this mix that I got from Dbltree and it works well:

Turnips 3#
Rape 2#
Daikon radish 5#

All "per acre" but make sure you don't put down too much seed or you won't get good growth. Hope this helps.

I planyed mid July and they eat everything. Roots ect. We watched deer pull them up and eat the whole thing in one shot.
I mixed 50/50 with brassica.

What else were you planting? If it's rye or something, you can mix a light amount of radish in with it. It's just with planting times, ie mid august with the cereal grains, you won't get max growth but it'll still be a treat.

Baydog I picked up some clovers, alfalfa, turnip, peas, soybean and a few others as well but most the them are already mixed together the only seed that is on its own is the radish and soybean I don't know if that helps you or not.
