Hey all i have about 6 acres of land, there is about 4 acres between private road and country road. my property is about 200 feet wide by 800 plus deep. I was thinking about putting 2 small food plots in there. Any advice to what i should do, what to plant. Also can i hunt on my cottage property anyone know the regs for that? Land is mainly flat, good cover and water. mainly maple and spruce trees. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

On a property of this size, you need to look outside of your 6 acres to really manage it to its potential. In this case, it really becomes a matter of looking at a couple hundred acres in all directions around you, and seeing what is missing or in least amount. Deer need food, cover, and water. In this case, you need to find which is the most limited. Is the surrounding area pressured by hunters and cover scarce? Gear yourself towards creating a sanctuary and hunt the outskirts as wind and access permit. Are agricultural fields scarce? If so, then a food plot would indeed be your best bet. Try for a large central plot, but don't hunt the plot itself. If there are agri fields nearby, then try several smaller plots, and offer things that are not available in the local area. Any way you slice it though, on a flat piece of land that size, access is going to be your challenge, so keep that in mind for where you place the plots themselves, if that's the direction you go. Happy hunting, man. |

I am up in calabogie and on one side of the lake is crown land, and on my side there is crown land so there is pressure from other hunters. I need to talk to neighbours, one of them bought up some good acreage so i am hoping he will allow me access to hunt and maybe set up some food plots too |

Hey Rob, where abouts in Calabogie are you located. I am somewhat familiar with the area as I spent a lot of time there in my youth. I live just outside of White Lake so not really that far as the crow flies. Donnie |
