Well I have always wanted to put in a food plot. Not much time since the house started. And really no spot cleared. So I took a quick survey of the land and though ok here is the spot. Not a lot of large trees. I did inquire about getting a grinder in to clear it but at %K I tohught hell when I have time I have the equipment. So the spring was too wet I got the tractor buried to the axles. OK not going good so far. Then I had to go to Calgary, Crap!! the weather was great dry as hell and not much moisture in the ground. After three weeks in Calgary I finally got at it. If someon wants a recomendatiion for a brush Mower All I can say is WOW buy a hause I thought I was going to tear the gearbox right off it but though OH well If I have to rebuild it once or twice it will be alot cheaper than 5K First thing to go I broke the back wheel off it. Next I twisted the PTO shaft a full turn it would not slide and when I let the mower deck down it would pull the shaft right off the tractor.. OUCH!! So off to TSC to buy a new shaft and this time a clutch pac 350$ good to go. After a week of Hogging and 3 days with a Spring Harrow and 1 Day with the discs I got it looking good and Jackie spread a bit of see dtoday I know it's late but heck worth a try. At least next year I will have an easier time getting going.. I am amazed the soil looks good and black no clay. I will get soil testing int he spring The start of it all ![]() ![]() ![]() The poor Brush Hogg hate to see the gears in it..Probably will sometime soon ![]() [ ![]() ![]() Almost had one catastophy as I had a coolant line yanked off by a stick dumped all the rad fluid Caught it just in time Ouch 5K would not have looked to bad if the engine dumped. Here we are Disking tonight ![]() I would say roughly around three acres done.. Maybe do a bit more next year.. ![]() ![]() And Jackie sprinkling the Magic seeds of life.. Now bring on the deer,!! ![]() Before anyone say's Man that is alot to seed by Hand it was only enough for 1/4 acre I have a broadcaster I may let her use next year.. She is alway saying I need to exercise.. So get at it.. |

great work coptor! What kind of seed did you plant?Just a suggestion but maybe you should try and plant some oats or wheat in the remainder of the plot...will be nice and green this fall if you plant it now and will be a great cover crop until next year when you can seed the whole thing in clover, brassica's, whatever you want.

I am thinking Winter wheat, or as some call "Fall wheat", if you want to hunt over it in late fall.

I tried to buy some stuff yeaterday at the seed mill. Had to order it I will get it in on Monday or Tuesday. I took your advice Swamp and got some winter wheat coming enough for an acre and I also bought some Turnips and a Clover called Double cut Red. The guy at the field mill said to mix the turnips with this and they work well together . He also said they come up quick should have enough time to get growth for this year. Wish the Brand stuff like Rack Stacker and Whitetail institue was not so pricy. It would cost me about 1K to plant this plot vrs around 100$ Guess we will see what comes up. I have planted Winter greens before and had the stuff shoot up 4 ft. I am too late for this this yeat however.. Time will tell thanks for the input.Like I say I had a hard enough time figureing out to to run the damn Impliments. I bought all the stuff at once Package deal did not have a clue how to get anyof it to work. Had to ask a farmer friend how to get the disks to cut in.. He laughed at me said put an engine block on top.. LOL I found some tractor wieghts I bought at the same time after 6 of these on top worked great!! Be ready for nect spring!! |

Sorry to be so long on the update but trying to get a bunch of stuff finished up around the house like the 4ft hole for the chimney closed in. And get ready for moose. Unlike the posting by Friggs I had no area defunk of most trees or would have picked the same. It was a Bitch getting rid of all the growth. That being said I think my soil is much better than expected. I had no time to test it will do maybe later this year or the spring. Here is growth after about 2 weeks we planted it as well Mid August. It looks amazing now I will walk back tonight and take a few more as My ATV is packed for moose.. It looks like about 4-5 inches of growth. Really going good I will post later here are the 2 weeks pictures.. This was a mixture of everything from the coop sort of like the old Bishops seeds mix this had quite a few soy beans amazing the deer ate them off instantly ![]() This is one called all season Buffet more smaller seeds ![]() This is just double cut red clover and turnips the turnips are going wild..

Looks like you have lots of organic matter in that plot and that clover and wheat should take off come spring. Looks good so far, have you placed any stands up yet ? I wish I had a tractor with a FEL and bushhog, all my work is with ATV and pull behind equipment. Keep us updated. Friggs |

Here are some pictures from tonight.. Yes there is quite a bit of organic matter. The stuff all seems to be growing Great the soy beans never had a chance as the deer have mowed 90% of them off Hope to plant a huge amount of Whitetail Institute Winter greens next year.. Here is my trail back to the plot it is about 500 m behind the house ![]() ![]() Here is Jackie's hand to give a prospective on the size of some of the plants ![]() ![]() And here is the Clover and Turnips now.. This has been in for four weeks ![]() Here is the winter wheat not as good as the other stuff but still not bad ![]() And here is some of the mixes we did

Bigr is right radish is where its at mine are roughly a foot long and close to 2 inches around the deer are hammering them. My turnips vary in size some golf ball right up to a soft ball size. My soybeans got raped early as well. |
