Hello all, first post. I planted about a 3/4 acre food plot with rack stacker seed back in May. Growth began slowly with this terrible dry weather. Either way it started to sprout nicely middle of June and I was seeing does on the plot almost everyday. 4 - 6 at a time and always during daylight. Even high noon sometimes. Then in mid July action stopped completley. It was so darn hot and at this point the does were back in the woods tending to the fawns. I left the plot all summer and almost nothing was coming out anymore. Then in early August I had a huge 8 point coming out during the night I was getting on my trail camera. Well he stopped coming now as well. Camera is not picking up any pictures at all, day or night. The plot seems to be much greener and taller now. Clovers, brassicas, rape, kale and turnips. Should I mow it once to get fresh growth? I can't understand why deer were here literally everyday to now not at all? will things change during fall? I have water sources about 3 of them within 200 yards of my plot, woods line two sides of my plot. Inside the woods its thick thick evergreens. Thanks |

I would say mowing it so that fresh shoots are there for the fall would be good. Deer may have found other nearby food sources to their liking. Sure you can set up to hunt the plot but you also need set ups in the bush too. |

Try this I did last year and I had my best year to date for deer numbers on my hunting property. Fertilize your plot with 46-0-0 urea on sept 15 before some timely rainforecasts at a rate of 100lbs per acre brassicas cereal grains, and 50lbs per acre for pure legumes{clovers.alfalfa,treefoil]. Urea will make your plots more palatable and digestable for your deer herd. This info I obtained from Ed Spinazolas dvd Ultimate food plots from QDMA . Trust me If you have a decent deer herd in your area they should herd up in your food plots by the end of sept and be there for your bow season. |

Awesome, thanks. Is urea something a farmers supply store would carry? |

I know I mostly deal with Gore Bay Agromart although I sometimes deal with a local feed store near Sudbury, the Agromart always has a huge supply of urea the other feed store does not stock it although I am sure you can get it special order what area are you from? |

I would not mow it this year as you will loose the benifit of the Brassicas come late season. They should come back. Mowing the brassicas would not be my choice this year but next year your clovers will need mowing. Let them establish this year. |

well I am may also be guilty of over doing things as well. Is there such thing as too many mineral licks? I have like 5 different scents on my plot, I only imagine it is good because everyone has a choice at the buffet table. But at the same time I'm thinking maybe the bucks are thinking this is wayyy too many. On my plot there is a apple cider lick, regular horse mineral lick, acorn lick, sugar beets juice on stumps LOL is this kinda like chinease buffet? you know something must be wrong when theres so much food for soo cheap. |
