What is the best fertilizer to spread on a mainly clover with a bit of brassica mixed into it for the fall? I mowed it back in July but it needs it again. I plan to mow it this week and then fertilize it again next weekend. Any suggestions?

Why are you mowing this plot when you have planted brassica in July ? Mowing will kill your brassica or if thats what you want. Regarding fertilizer, clover likes lots of potash (K) and needs little or no nitrogen and if your planting a fresh crop of clover you might want 30-40 lbs/ac of nitrogen at planting. So I usually mow my established clover plots around the mid-end of August and fertilie 100-200 lbs/ac of 6-26-26 or 6-28-28. The following spring and summer I mow it several times when it gets to tall or weeds grow above the clover. With brassica it needs lots of nitrogen so I throw down 100-200 lbs/ac of 19-19-19 with the seed and in 3-4 weeks later throw down 100-150 lbs/ac of urea (46-0-0), just before a rain of at least half an inch. I usually dont plant my brassica into clover I like it separate but I know others do it with great success. I find my clover chokes out the brassica. If your clover is burned from the lack of rain and hot summer maybe brassica will work. Friggs |

Fall fertilizing 46-0-0 pure nitrogen 100lbs per acre brassicas, cereal grains and 50lbs per acre pure legumes clovers, treefoil, alfalfa. This will make your plots more attractive digestible and palatable for your deer herd. Fertilize before a timely rain. |

Friggs, it was a plot mix that I picked up from Bishop's seeds years ago and I planted it early as a spring pot and just as you said, the clover choked out the brassica, there is a bit left in there, but I decided to mow it mid summer and let the clover fully take over, and it pretty much has, that's why I am mowing it again. Thanks for the info fella's

I thought you broadcasted brassica into an existing clover plot. So I would do the same as you suggested. Mow it, fertilize soon and watch. See what comes up in forage and if the deer like it. If all is good, keep mowing this plot next growing season. Friggs |

Yeah the deer were really hammering it a bout 3 weeks ago but on checking my camera last week they are not feeding there as much....mainly b/c I think the clover has lost that sweetness that they so desire. I think another mow and shot of fertilizer will bring them back around... |
