Depending on where you live I think it would work well. I have pu pumpkins out with absolutely no success. They rot in to the ground. I even put corn and appled inside a pumpkin. Deer ate the stuff from inside and left the pumpkin and pumpkin was left to rot

However, I know some people from different areas tht have good luck with putting hem out...is like carrots. Places that grow carrots have deer problems. Heck I know one guy who buys carrots by the truck load to put out for feed and it works great for him. We threw 40 pounds of carrots out last fall and they hardly got touched.

I say nothing venture nothing gained. Giver a try. Good luck

I planted several pumpkin plants along the outside of my small plot a couple years ago. We have a lot of Donnybrook soil (gravel) with a few fields of mixed silt till (Harriston silt Loam).........Needless to say it is too well drained for most crops that aren't watered regularly through the August dry period. However I have a garden on the same property that the deer destroyed the pumpkin plants in. They ate the foilage and fresh buds but didn't seem interested in the actual pumpkins on the vine.

I bought a truck load of pumpkins from a guy who raises them in October. He raises them and they were left overs that didn't sell. I was very hesitant as I was in farm country and never used them. With the price of corn and 25.00 for as many as you could fit in your truck box I thought I might as well give it a try. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. The deer ate the whole truck load in the months of Nov/Dec. I know they would have ate the whole truck load in a couple weeks had I let them but here in Wisconsin we have baiting limits and can only put out so much every day. Again this was the first year I used them but here is what I found out. Bust the pumpkins open for the deer. They eventually get thru the hard outside shell but like anything else if you make it easier for them they will be more likely to eat it. They will eat the soft insides first and seem to prefer that but they ate the outsides also ,only after the insides were eaten. I am no pumpkin expert and don't know the exact type I was using but they ate all the 4 or 5 different types I had. There were large and small orange ones. Bluish green and greenish yellow ones . Big,flat ,or small ,they are them all. I started with pumpkins in November and not sure if the deer would eat them earlier ??? They might be similar to turnips,rape,etc... where a good freeze sweetens them up. These were in a pile since Oct. when I picked them up so they had froze hard many times.
I have talked to others who tried pumpkins and the results varied from " The deer don't eat them in my area " to " Don't tell anyone my secret as the deer absolutely love them." If you try pumpkins don't be discouraged if they are not eaten right away let them freeze several times and then bust them open and I think you will have the same results as I did.

i harvested some seeds from a few different kinds of pumpkins the previous year and planted about 15 plants and the deer devoured the pumpkins (basket ball sized) / flowers and leaves of the plants ...this year i will be planting way more...the deer in our area love pumpkins...they will part of my plots ...not in the plot mix but off to the side

Yip pumpkins work...when I use them I step on em or bust em open for the deer. I have even sat and watched rabbits (well hares actually) nibble on them too. I don't use lots though just a few at a time. They don't compete with apples or corn though...anyone ever try peanut butter???
