Bad news for anyone who wants to plant food plots using seed from the American companies such as BioLogic and Whitetail Institutes. The Ministry of Agriculture has changed the laws regarding importation of seed. I'm not confident enough in the detaisl of the new rules to post them, but the basic run-down is this; The Ministry has changed the amount of time a seed blend is required to be tested before allowed for import, and it is now impossible/impractical to get certain types of seed tested and across the border in a timely fashion. This affects all seed types, not just deer-hunting specific species. This is causing quite a stink and may soon be reversed, but in the mean time it means that most types of food plot seeds will not be sent North from the U.S.A. I just got off the phone this afternoon with Whitetail Institute's Canadian distrubutor. They caught wind of this almost a year ago so he was able to order extra seed, but his stocks are running low, fast. There are plans in the works to begin licenced production of Whitetail Institute's seed up here in Canada, which will be great for us in the long term. However, right now, if anybody has plans to use any Whitetail Institutes products in the next couple years, you need to get on the horn with Magnum Marketing and place an order. |

In the longer term, I don't see this as being a bad thing. As Tim mentioned, some of the companies might start producing in Canada. Also, this might be just the opportunity some of the smaller Canadian seed companies need to expand and improve their businesses. Also, it might be a wake up call to a lot of plotters that the expensive stuff isn't necessarily the best. Deer farmers don't generally plant the brand-name hunting stuff. They plant other proven strains that have been for sale for ages. Look into Pickseed's lineup. They have a variety of strains of white clover, alfalfa, red clover, and the list goes on. You'll save some money by buying from these guys too. Plus, unlike some of the people selling you the brand name hunting stuff, the big seed companies have people that can actually help you get it right the first time. Just some thoughts that I had. I have had great success with using red clover seed harvested by our neighbour, and also had good results with Pickseed's white clovers. At the end of the day, I think the only animal able to tell the difference between the WT Institute clover and the other clovers would be us humans. |

I for one don't see this as the end of the world. Like Cervus and warning said, there are lots of other things to plant without buying something just because it had a picture of. Big buck on the bag do some research, plant what will grow well on your property and you will also save A ton of money by not buying OVER PRICED seeds.

You're very right, seed is still available locally, and in fact I use white clover & soybeans from Pickseed, my cousin is a salesman for them. However I do like the wintergreen & secret spot varieties from Whitetail institutes and Biologic. Granted, the seed from the main companies is grossly over-priced, but they have done their research, and picked plant varieties that deer prefer. |

Some of the local guys I know have gotten seed from the guy in Coe Hill & are happy w/ the results. I had good results w/ the brassica mix from Evolved last year even w/o trailcams (which I had) you could see that the deer were munching down on the "tops". A few years ago I had planted Evolved's Great Lakes mix that contained a lot of wild turnips in a location about a hundred yards north of last year's plot. We didn't have any cameras @ the time & didn't notice much activity on that plot. |

Here the guy from Coe Hill"s website if anyone is interested.... http://www.topgunsinfoodplots.com/food-plots-made-easy.html I've never been their but I have a friend who hunts in that area and has visited his farm, he was impressed. You can buy those same seeds here in Ontario. Friggs |

I've tried both the Biologic and Whitetail Institute seeds with limited success! Nothing compared to the seeds I get from the local co-op! Being in northern Ontario, with poorer soil, it's important to have seeds that can withstand the harsher conditions. Rackstacker's seeds have taken off very well on my plots as well! His seeds come from his farm in Bancroft, making them much more resilient for our conditions. I think that this is a good thing, to promote canadian seed companies! |

I've tried Super-uck, Field Edge and Amplified all with good success, are you certain that Steve from Rackstacker grows his seeds in Bancroft ? I didn't know this, I know he use to experiment on his farm in Roslin and holds annual field-days there. You would need a fairly large farm to grow the seeds that he sells in Ontario. I know he use to be an executive member of QDMA Canada and might still be. If you have ever seen his brochure and seen the young girl wearing sunglasses and holding up several purple top turnips, that's my daughter. Friggs |

I drove past Chesher's store in Bancroft & noticed a BioLogic sign out front. I turned around & stopped in. They had quite a decent selection of BioLogic & Whitetail Institute seeds. I mentioned the cross border issue & the chap said he wasn't aware of any problems. He had just received a shipment of new stock from the Belleville store. |

I got a BUNCH of seeds directly from steve about 5 years ago (give or take) and still have some from that batch. At that time I know that they were coming from his Bancroft farm. He has expanded considerably since then and have no idea where the seeds are coming from anymore to be honest. |

Biologic seeds are at a much better priced when compaired to buck on a bag seeds. Still can get the same or better seed from coops but at least there mark up isn't 4-5X the cost. |
