I thought I would share some photos of my fruit trees, Oak and Chestnut that I grew for deer and wildlife.
I just finished pruning several seedlings that I T-bud grafted last summer. Five are Dolgo crabapple grafted onto wild crabapple seedlings from my hunt camp. And the other five are Red Barlett from my mothers backyard onto Bosc seedlings.

Here you can see a close-up of one of the buds starting to turn red, which is a good sign.

And these three were T-budded last year and will be planted in a couple of weeks at the hunt camp. One Liberty apple onto crabapple seedling and two Bosc pear onto rootstock i bought (primus communis).

Here is a close-up, the thicker red one to the back left is the Liberty apple, these T-buds all grew over four feet last year.

Posted Image

This is not a grow-op but my oak and chestnuts that I grew over the winter from nuts I collected and bought online.

Here is a Burr Oak on the left and a Chinese Chestnut.

I have growing now are Burr oak, White oak and Swamp white oak this winter and will be planting them outdoors this spring.

We have a natural burr oak stand around tbay(which has mainly been bulldozed for a pit) and its the only native oak around... I was always thinking that it would be good to try to grow a few in the backyard. Good idea

Gather up some of those acorns this fall and start them this coming winter. My Burr Oak acorns came from several trees in Whitby last fall.
Burrs are from the white oak family and white oaks are preferred by deer and turkey because of less tanin.

I've found online that they can handle winters of -20F (-28C). This winter I got down to -32 at my hunt camp, but thats the coldest I've seen in several years.
I guess we'll see what happens this winter, didn't cost me much to grow.
Their growing in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minasota, is that near you (;

Those are coming along well. I am too old to plant oak trees unless I am planting them for my grand kids. Don't they take forever to mature?

Your right, I won't see any acorns from the white oaks, but maybe the burrs, swamp white and chinese chestnuts in 10-15 years. I'm in my mid 50's so I hope i'm around to see it.

There is an amazing feeling that comes with planting a tree that will far outlast us and even our kids. You are doing an amazing job Friggs, and I'm sure people will be admiring some of those trees a hundred years from now.

You should get a brass plate with your name and the plating date on it and attach it to the tree.

There are some trees on the Experimental Farm in Ottawa that have plaques and those trees were planted in the late 1800's. Very impressive!

The Governor Generals residence in Ottawa also has a large assortment of trees that were planted by former heads of state during their visits to Ottawa. (at least them put in 1 shovel full of dirt in the hole when the tree was planted) There is a tree planted in the early 1960's by JFK for example. Pretty neat to be standing there seeing that history. Great place to bring your kids if they are still young and not too cool to hang out with their dad yet.

That's a great idea. I didn't know about the plaques at the experimental farm. Very neat!

Great job friggs, Are you going to put some sort of enclosure around them for a couple of years?

I'll place a 3' circle of 5' tall fencing around the oaks and chestnuts and a 5' circle around the fruit trees. I'll prune the under growth or lower branches of all the trees above 5ft. then place a smaller circle of fencing to stop bucks from rubbing the trunk. Bucks love rubbing the trunks when there around 2"-6" thick after that they aren't interested.

Next time I am near there I'll see if I can find that tree with the plaque and I'll get a picture.

The tree is right here somewhere in the "Ornamental Gardens", zoom in on the "B" marker: Then you can check out street view.
