I started using a homemade mineral mix last year and they worked great, deer hit them very hard untill september, and then just a little the rest of the year.
Last year I pre mixed everything and put it into two totes, everything seemed fine with that, but I have been told by a couple people that I should not pre mix it just mix before I'm going to use it, but none of them ever said what the problem was with pre mixing.
So my question is, what is the problem with pre mixing your mineral mix (di-cal, tm, salt)

Thanks
Ron

Ron,

Just curious as to what it cost for the 3 bags? I'm looking at making my own mix this spring too. Thanks in advance

I bought all my mix at Masterfeeds in Komoka, ON

1 part Di-Cal, 2 parts TM, 1 part Salt

Di-Calcium Phosphate (Mono-Cal) 25kg $34.50
Trace Mineral 25kg $11.50 x 2 $23
Feed Mixing Salt 25kg $5

So thats about $70 after tax for 220lbs of mineral.

That sure beats 5lbs for $13 in the store.

Thanks for the info! Can't wait to mix up a batch and spread it out in front of the cams!

Picked up these 4 bags at Ritchie Feed and Seed in Ottawa in the fall of 2011:

Posted Image
Mono-calcium phosphate 25 kg bag $29.99
Iodized Stock salt 25 kg bag $10.49
Trace mineral salt, the red & loose kind without the medications 25 kg bag $15.49
Dried Molasses 25 kg bag $18.59

and I got $10 off with a coupon so it was $70 including tax out the door for 100kg (220lbs). I still have 3/4 of the stuff left and will be putting some out in 2 different areas this spring

It would be interesting to do a comparison between BOB minerals and this mixture and see which brands the deer prefer.
Place a trail camera in front of your mineral site and see what happens.
Any taker's....?

I have lot's of photo's of deer and 1 bear using the salt. I used to use the pail's on a post but now just put salt's on an old stump. I have used all 4 ingredients before but only use Trace mineral and Iodized salt now. I tried the dried molasses on it's own and it was never touched. I see Iodized salt is on sale at the old Co-op stores (now called Tru Country & Garden) for $20 for two 25kg. bag's. Sale end's April 20th. :goodluck!:

I pre-mix all mine up as well into 5 gallon pails, same mix but with 1 part dried molasses and a couple packets of jello mix to help them find it faster
I have also read about not premixing but have never seen an explanation and so far it doesnt appear to be a problem for me

The only problems I could see with pre mixing is if it is damp it could clump together or as a big pre mixed container you may not get the right ratio of salts and minerals when you scoop it out.
