Mineral locations renewed.

I have renewed my mineral locations and they are all getting hammered. So easy and simple. Dical Phosphate, Trace mineral salts with Vitamins A, D, E and Selenium that also contain manganese, Iodine, Copper, Sulfur and other Trace Minerals.

It is so easy to make and so cheap when you get the bulk 50lb bags. I still can't believe some people who try and tell me that I need to by this or that companies product when I can make my own for a fraction of the price.

Have been up at my deer camp the last couple weekends and noticed my mineral sites have been getting hammered.
Seems to work even better than the deer Cane I used to put out and a lot more
bang for the buck!

2parts trace mineral
2parts stock salt
one part dicalcium phosphate
one part granular molasses

Thought I Would re-post the mix for anyone who was looking to make some new mineral sites or freshen up some old ones.
Thank you to whoever posted the recipe on this site originally.
It works great!

Usually any feed or seed store that sells farm supplies will have it.

I pick up most of my minerals in Northern Minnesota. My local feed store carries di-cal after I asked him to bring some in but they did not have the trace minerals I was looking for.

I bought over the counter Primos Red-Spot, cause it was on sale....the deer are going nuts over it but it sure does not last long and with a regular price of $15 for a I think 5 lb bag I am going to start mixing up my own homebrew of mineral! :renedeer:

I'm heading to the feed store right now! I've finally started to get caught up on things.
Time to get things going for hunting season, first day of Summer is tomorrow after all and time is flying by! :howdy:

Do you guys keep minerals out all year? Or just spring?

I have had them out before with almost no results at all. I just out one out in one spot about 3 days ago have not checked yet. How much longer will they hit mineral sites?

Minerals are out 24/7 365. Keep refreshing your site. If you find a location is not getting hit very much change location. I have never seen deer not find a salt source but some locations are better than others. Soil composition is a consideration, safe loaction in the forest, proximity to water, also I would put a mineral source on the south side close to the drip line of some conifers (spruce or pines) so that in late winter, early spring solar energy and the salt will be exposed early. Deer need minerals most in late winter early spring. Just some ideas I have learned.

They will hit them all year, but really slow down on them in late September through til really early spring. They will still go for them, I've seen them dig through snow to get to them, but not nearly as much as early spring through the summer.

As far as placement and tactics, everything Rene said is great advice. We run anywhere from 10 - 15 sites or so, and sometimes we need to move them to get better traffic. I would also add that if you are in an AG area, crop rotations are huge for where the deer travel to and from, as well as other factors like acorn yields and dry/wet years.

Interesting. I've used some "deer" brand ones and honestly don't know what happened to them if it was rain or deer. I have had two cow brand ones out there. Both sat in two different locations for a whole year until they were eaten or washed away. I've also used the liquid form ones like the sugar beets etc. poured it all over old stumps. Again nothing.

I have up on them since last summer and finally bought one called trophy rock which I put now on a brand new location on man made trail which is almost never used by humans. Set up a camera to see if it works. Most of the licks I had before were on my plots so maybe they were more interested in the forage and not mineral at that time.

Lets see if this one works.

Looking forward to the pictures Rene!

Just like Proxy said, the deer mostly use them in early spring through to mid-summer. Having the mineral in a moist (but not under water) area is key. The mineral dissolves, and the deer will eat the soil to get at the mineral.

Deer start to consume salt as soon as spring green up happens. THe lush water-rich vegetation causes a lot of salt to be flushed from the deer's body, and they crave sodium to try to balance this loss. Once the forage starts to dry up, the salt cravings subside.

I add a few packs of Jello mix in on top of my freshly applied mineral to help the deer find it faster, they are usually on them within a day or two if not the same day I put it out

I use the same recipe as Willy and it works well
I have also had good results with Trophy Rock

TSC also carries Sweet Lix Mineral Supplements for around $23 a bag (pre-mixed for deer) which also works real well

Mineral sites are in my opinion the best way to take an inventory of what deer are using your property

Wow. I can't believe how strongly people feel about these and the lack of my success with them.

Maybe the trophy rocks will do the trick. Ill see what comes. If it starts working ill set up more locations.
