Is it too late to grow corn? I want to plant 3-4 rows just to give cover. Will it grow 36" by the opener?

Thanks

I'm no farmer and no nothing about it but if I were you I'd plant it anyways , some cover is better then none at all., just my opinion. :goodluck!:

if you want you can but i couldn't tell you how high it will be around here we plant corn the first of may and the rule of thumb is knee high by the 4th of july. So that would put it growing about a foot a month in the first two months. If you are going to plant it i would put some 8-12-12 fertilizer on it and it should be 3 feet tall by opening day. If it was me i would wait and do it next year because if it doesn't get high enough for you it will just get harder to grow because corn takes all the nitrogen out of the ground. Im not saying that it wont grow next year if you try this year but it will get harder. Its really up to you good luck and happy growing

You corn certainly still plant corn as a cover crop. Your growing season depends on where you live but any corn planted now should still reach 4' height by the fall. However you will have poor yields on the grain, in my area June 10 is the latest anyone will put corn in, and they won't expect a great crop.
As stated corn is a Nitrogen hungry crop, so it doesn't do well if you repeat plant it, and use a nitrogen rich fertilizer. Be carefuk of over-fertilizing though, you can burn the plants.

I would still plant the corn, it will function well as a cover crop and provide some nutrition.

I would have to agree with swampridge. Now what you could do with out seeing your plot is plant the corn along one side and the sorgum along another two sides then change it the next year and plant the corn along one of the sides with the sorgum and so on that way it will be acting like a crop rotation when the farmers plant corn then soybeans followed by wheat. I'm sure you will find that when your corn is the only stuff standing that the deer will be in there if they are anything like they are around here all you have to do is go around the outside of the field and take the corn off and leave about a 400 feet by 200 feet of it standing and setyour blind along the field edge and watch about 30 deer come and go that only work if your the farmer lol our give a 60 of crown lol
