Ok so after my 18 threads about my strategy this year. I need to correct one plot. I posted a thread about growing corn and I see sorghum may be a better choice and them to alternate between that and corn each year as a cover crop as the spot the plot is on has a field exposed to horse riders etc in the distance. I want deer to feel safe. The plot this year I flipped soil before spraying last years rack stacker. So the plot is so over run with clovers and weeds that the peas and soy I planted this yesr are growing great but are so far and few in between. My strategy originally was to grow the soy and pea crop. Then spray and kill half in time for brassicas to go in. But now because the plot is literally 3' tall of such a mess I want to just kill it all and start new. But I need to hurry. I have a huge water tank I can spray this plot with water often to get it up to speed. So what's my best strategy? Spray round up on the tall grass? Will it take a millions years to kill? Maybe flip the soil, then spray the dirt to kill everything? Then seed? Please help here. Thanks And I know it's early but I want to spray now and plant the sorghums and leave the plot as dirt until I seed brassicas in August. |

is there any way you can cut your 3 foot tall mess as close to the ground as possible? then wait few days or a week and then spray it with round up.. also u might want to talk to a local fertilzer company and see if there is a chemical they recommend that you could add in your sprayer tank mix with the round up that will help smoke your mess.. |

I don't know what kind of area you're in, and whether you can burn the grass off, but if that's possible it's what I'd do. Bush-hog/mow the grass down, give it a few days, get a burn permit, and scorch the earth. You've got that big water tank, so a careful burn is easy. Immediately after till the soil lightly, the ash is a decent fertilizer, and a good fire burns some of the roots off in the sod, so tillage is easier. Within days of a fire your grass & weeds shoot out of the ground, so hit them with roundup, then plant your fall mix. If a fire is out of the question, then cut low and rake the grass. Wait a week, spray, then seed. |

Just remember, certain Sorghum's and horses don't mix well, if that is a concern with you.

What you mean? Horses die or sorghum gets eaten?? Well I guess I know the answer to either. Horses die. Cause they shouldn't be on my property lol |

alskie clover is toxic for horses, depending on your area and what surrounds you...would depend on what you plant , buckwheat then plow down for a fall crop, will help with all the weeds |
