My First Plot

Ok just sprayed the 1 acre plot with round up going to disc it up in the next couple of days. For all you veteran potters out there what would you plant? The plot is on a side hill that runs down to cedars and a river 100yrd away. A alfalfa field is at the top of the plot. What I want to accomplish is something to attract for early bow season October 1st and late bow season when the snow/cold temps come. This bush is also on the edge outer edge of a deer yard in the winter time. The far side of this bush (which is fairly large) see alot of pressure from hunting and other activity. Last fall just before bow season I would count up to 15 deer in the alfalfa field and the biggest being a 4 pointer.
Thoughts?

I would wait 10-14 days after spraying glyphosate before discing. You can't beat alfalfa for attracting deer. I would plant rye grain, oats and peas at 50 lbs. per acre of each and plant this mid to late August. This combination is cheap and easy to grow and will last from September till the following spring. Also radishes and turnips are a good combination. Now is the time to be thinking about planting the radishes and turnips (brassica).

If this is your first crop on this plot and your not certain of your soil condition then I would go with the rye combo and if your soil is fair to good than go with the brassica. I would add 100lbs/ac of urea to the brassica at 4-5 weeks after planting and just before a good rain. I think because of your large deer numbers I would go with the rye combo or 3/4 of an acre of rye combo and a 1/4 acre strip of brassica. That way you can see how things go your first year than you can adjust your plot accordingly. My deer are a little fussy with brassica and don't hit the brassica till late October.

Good luck...Friggs

I agree with most of Frigg's post. Glyphosate tricks the plant into stopping photosynthesis, so if you've just sprayed give it a week to work. You may need to reapply in certain areas anyways. Once you've worked the soil, wait a week, or 2, then spray the new growth weeds. There are an amazing amount of dormant weed seeds that lay in the soil, and tilling the ground allows them to take off. After your second spray you'll be into your august planting season. My all around favorite food for deer is soybeans, but it's too late to plant them and have a productive crop, so I would go with a combo similar to what Friggs suggested. Oats, Rye grain, clover & Alfalfa. The clover & alfalfa will be slow starters but they're perrenials, and they will be the backbone of your plot in the next couple years, until they're choked out by weeds. Rye grain (NOT grass) and oats will provide nice forage this fall if properly fertilized, and also nutrition over the winter & early spring.

Brassica would be a good idea as well, and I would reccomend using a tillage raddish if you do. They shoot down a huge taproot which draws nutrient back up to the topsoil, and provide green fertilizer after the frost kills them off.

The only thing I disagree with is the seed population. Planting 150# of seed combo per acre is way more than you should. You will get a poor crop as the seed that germinates will be in competition with each other for real estate & nutrients. I recomend 10lbs per acre of clover or alfalfa, or half & half of each, seeded in with 20-30lbs each of oats & rye.

What kind of equipment do you have available?

I have all farm equipment available to me. I was just wondering what crops would work best. I really appreciate the responses.
