All you foodplotting guru's out there. We have a freshly worked up 1/2 acre. Is it possible to plant this late in the year in NW Ontario? Winter wheat or something or should I just wait until spring.

Winter wheat and red clover.

Gives them something now and if the red clover can take a bit, in the spring as well.

Then next August, Turn it over as green fertalizer and blant your brassicas

or

Turn it over and plant 4010 peas in June.
That's what I would do, more option 1 then the next year option 2.

It's going to be winter wheat or winter rye. We will plow it under next year while it is still succulent and try something else. Got tons of clover around. The appeal with the winter grain is something that will grow in cold temperatures and be there for deer early in the spring. Give it a shot. Will throw a bag of 10-52-0 in with it as our area is somewhat low in phosphorus and this will help root growth.

I would go with fall rye for the value it adds to your soil next spring or early summer when you till it under. Fall rye will grow best of the cereal grains growing in cold weather.

Thanks guys. Deb is at the farm now, I believe she is planning to go with rye. I have yet to talk to her. She prepped this plot by herself with little help from me. I helped moved a few rocks and cut a few stumps. Nice to have a GF who takes so much interest in the farm.

Winter rye on its own went in today. We added some lime and fertilizer a few days ago and worked it in. Today we broadcast the seed and drove over everything with the quads to help with soil contact. See how it goes. Seems really late to plant. Supposed to get 1-3mm of rain tomorrow. We got two other 1/2 acre plots done this spring and one is a whitetail mix next to a beaver pond. Came in fantastic and a lot of deer hitting it. The other is more remote and was clover overseeded with oats. It did great as well but of course a few bears rolled through the oats a bit. I finally put a camera out there yesterday. There is lots of deer sign. Our main fields are all cut and we plan to work up 10 acres later this fall for a spring plant of probably alfalfa primarily. Now that we have a square bailer we plan to start working towards getting some good high test alfalfa fields going and make our own feed and start feeding all winter.

Wow, just wow. Thanks for the advice. The fall rye is already 4-5 inches tall across the entire plot. Some great weather coming this week too so it should be succulent come November. Now that I seen this with my own eyes I am definitely more apt to try some more fall plantings. Again, thanks to the members here and you know who you are, who help others here with your advice and tips.

Here is a picture of our new plot from the tree stand right after I finished seeding and rolling it. I'll take a picture of the growth next time I go and check the card.

Plot looks great, that rye is amazing stuff, grows real well in cooler weather.
Can't wait to see what kind of action you get on your trail camera.

Hopefully I get some sort of results
The farmer across the rd from my place turned the soil over last week
for me and said to let him know when I'm done seeding and he will take care of the
rest
So today he will come by and disk it so the seed has a covering of soil

Rye will germinate at temp as low as 34 degrees fehrenheit and will continue to grow at 38 degrees fehrenheit.
