Ok, so I have some questions for you successful food plotters here in Ontario

What time of year should a soil sample be taken?
Are there kits available for doing this?
Where do you send or take the samples once you collect them?

I am in Southern Ontario and I don't have access to any farm equipment for working up the land so this is going to be a poor mans plot with lots of elbow grease. I would like to make several mini 1/4 acre plots if possible

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

I took my soil samples in the spring take them from different locations around your plot not just in one spot you will be surprised how much the ph in soil can change just in a small area . I took my sample to a lab that did soil samples right here in Kingston . it gave me the ph of soil fert and lime reccomendations and the best plants to plant for my ph level .
if you have no farm equipment you must have acess to a 4 wheeler you can rent equipment like plot mules small discs at rental places
if not I suggest getting an old lawn mower clear out your plot as best you can chain saw bush hog if you can find someone that will do it for you and then spray round up and kill all weed growth
since there going to be small plots I would recommend planting later like augest as you want your plots lush during hunting season and later into the yr
turnip winter wheat winter pea forage radish plants like this will last late into hunting season and will help you draw and hold deer in your hunting locations

This is where I send my soil samples to http://www.alcanada.com/
They are in London, Ontario, print off a submission form and send it along with your sample through Canada Post.
I send about a 1/2 to a full cup of dry soil inside a baggie. I take a sample from the surface to about six inches down at several spots.
This is what it looks like when you get your results.

As you can see this test was done on March 27, 2012 and my PH is 6.1, since then I added about 1,200 lbs of dolomite lime to this 1/4 acre kill plot back in August. I want this plot to be a clover plot for 3-5 years so they sent me the recommendations for clover based on this sample. Last August I planted 3 types of clover, chicory along with a cover crop of rye and oats which turned out great. This spring I'll take another soil sample and maybe throw down a bag of K-Mag after I get the results.

Focus on getting your PH around 6.5 and it will take several years to get your soil where it will grow most crops, as long as you get good rainfall.
