I was after this buck last year and have had him on trail cams for the last 4 years. I actually missed him on Nov.7 Last season. He came in 20 yards broadside at last light following a doe and i completely missed. I was using a lighted nock so i was able to see exactly what the arrow did as i shot it. It completely did a barrel role and smashed into the ground 5 feet in front of the deer. I was in complete shock as the buck obviously took off. The next day i checked my gear and realized that the elastics holding the blades closed on my broad heads were really weathered and breaking. I figured that maybe on the shot, the elastic snapped and one of the blades opened up cause the arrow to spiral out of control!? to this day it is a mystery to me. But i was better prepared this season, shooting my bow everyday and checking my gear constantly before each hunt.. As the fall rolled around i had one buck in mind. But as October came along, he wasn't showing up on cams and i was starting to get a bit worried. Finally when November came he was starting to sniff the does out. I had my first encounter with him on Nov 6 at last light. He was chasing does around all flared up snorth wheezing and crashing around but he wouldn't come in. Next weekend couldn't come soon enough. I had another encounter with him on friday night at last light. He came in at 20 yards broadside following a doe. I drew back but once i looked through the peep i couldn't see him anymore, only my pins. So i had to let him walk. The next morning he was all around my tree stand according to the trail cam pictures but unfortunately i was not able to hunt that morning. I went out that evening and ended up seeing him hanging around 2 does downwind but i think he may have smelled me because he took off but the does stuck around. The Next day came with high anticipation. But it didn't start off so great. Winds were at 30km/h with gusts up to 50km/h which totally killed the deer movement. Finally the wind died down around 4 and a spike had come out. Shortly after he walked off and then a doe came in. I heard soft grunting behind the doe and thought that it was the spike coming back, until i saw the huge rack moving through the brush. I think he may have noticed me moving in the tree because he stopped coming in and froze for about 10 mins looking in my direction. Finally that spike started moving in on the doe and got the big boy to come in the rest of the way. He was all flared up and ready for a fight and was standing 30 yards broadside looking at the spike. Thats what made me able to make a really great shot on him. I can't even count how many hours i have put in scouting and hunting for this buck, but in the end was all worth it!! One thing that i can definitely take from this and hopefully pass it along is to get in the habit of ALWAYS checking your equipment, especially before the hunt!

That is awesome , congrats on finally scoring on that deer. I have one I have been chasing for about 4 years haven't had an equipment issue but a couple years ago at last light I missed him at 35 yards hit a twig I didn't see right in front of me. Nice to see that come together and with archery tackle even better !

Great story and buck. That must have been a heck of an exhilarating feeling to be chasing a buck and seeing him on your cameras for 4 years and then finally connecting. Are you getting him mounted? What happened after you made the shot?
