Well, Alter Bridge released their latest album, AB III, a week ago in Europe and Australia with a release date of November 9, 2010 everywhere else. This is my review of it. Let me start off by saying that it's a different direction than their previous two records. This album is much darker lyrically speaking. They've used the term "loose concept album" to describe it, which is also different from their last two. It will take a "true" fan to completely appreciate this record, and I wouldn't recommend it to new listeners. With that being said, however, I believe it's their best album to date. Myles Kennedy doesn't dissapoint on vocals. Throughout the album he goes from this up-beat melodic sound to awe-inspiring eerie (Spelling?) vocals, which is deeply noted in the opening of "Slip to the Void." He hits an insanely high note in the outro of "Words Darker than their Wings." I was extremely pleased with Brian Marshall on Bass and Scott Phillips on drums, who shows out a little bit more on this record than previous ones. Mark Tremonti delivers on lead guitar with great metal riffs, as well as clean acoustic layering on a few tracks, remarkable solos, and just what you come to expect from him. Now, a review of each song: 1. Slip to the Void Perfect song to start the album off with. Opening reminded me of "Shuddershell" by The Mayfield Four (Myles Kennedy's former band), very eerie. The intensity picks up around 1:29. Great guitar breaks at 2:40-2:58, 3:04-3:10, and 3:15-3:21. 2. Isolation One of the heaviest songs on the album. Lyrically great. Myles Kennedy plays the solo on this one. 3. Ghosts of Days Gone By Starts out very upbeat musically. After the second chorus, however, it takes a complete 180, back to the darker element of AB III. One of my personal favorites. 4. All Hope is Gone Nicknamed "the pirate song" amongst fans. I think they were listening to a little bit too much pirate metal when they wrote the music =/. The darkest song on the album. I love the pirate vibe in the verses. 5. Still Remains HOLY SHIT. I knew this was going to be a great one when the hairs on my neck stood up at 0:15. The heaviest song on the album, IMO. Beautifully written. I lost it at 2:40. I literally started shaking. My God it's a beast of a song. 6. Make it Right This one was good as well, but it felt... I don't know, rushed I guess. It's still great, solo is awesome. 7. Wonderful Life One word describes this song: Beautiful. Shed a tear on this one. If any of you have listened to "In Loving Memory," you know that Alter Bridge can write songs that effect your emotions. This one just pulls on you. This is the ballad of the album. 8. I Know it Hurts Most upbeat song on the album, IMO. Kind of an "Anti-depressive" song, as one person puts it. I'd have to agree with them. One of the few positive songs on the album. 9. Show Me A Sign One of my favorite songs on the album. It's the longest song, clocking in at 5:56. Great drum fill in the outro, great solo. 10. Fallout Again, another great song. Lyrically, it's one of my favorites. has a more bluesy element to it. 11. Breathe Again Great Bass line. Myles holds a very long note on this one. Again, one of my favorites. 12. Coeur D'Lene Song about a home away from home (for these guys, Coeur D'Lene, Idaho). Love the riff in this song. 13. Life Must Go On One of my favorite choruses ("The sun always sets, the moon always falls. It feels like the end, Just pay no mind at all. Keep rollin'... rollin'... Life must go on.") Goes back to the One Day Remains melodic sound that's present in "Shed My Skin." Love it, just absolutely love it. It is my favorite song on the album. 14. Words Darker Than Their Wings Well, it's the end of the album, what can you expect from this one? How about a duet between lead vocalist Myles Kennedy and guitarist Mark Tremonti? That's exactly what you get here. Tremonti has a great voice, and I'd love to hear solo work from him after hearing the performance on this song. Your mind will be blown at 4:55. Myles Kennedy hits one of the highest notes I've EVER heard. I don't see how he hits that. Overall, this is their best album, period. I give it a 4.5 out of 5. Probably one of the best albums that'll come out this year. You'll probably think this review is bias, since I'm a huge fan of these guys. But listen for yourself. I used to have a friend who was really into the same musical genres as you. He was an American but moved to Germany as a kid, I'll try to look him up, you two would be good friends. |

Time to finish up this review... for the time being. I've just listened to the two U.S bonus tracks, "Home" and "Zero." Lyrically, they are polar opposites, but they both address hope/faith/religion. "Home" addresses holding on to hope in "a world gone mad" while "Zero" is, loosely, about someone who has turned away from all he/she once believed, no longer sees the good in life, and is no longer whole. Both are outstanding and very deep. Down here in the "Bible Belt," however, "Zero" would probably be interpreted as Anti-Christ by most conservative Christians for obvious reasons (you'll know when you hear it). Musically, I like "Zero" more. It's much darker than "Home," and I don't understand how it could've possibly been cut from the original album. "Home" has an outstanding outro solo. There's one more song left to review, "For What May Never Come," which hasn't been leaked yet (it's on the Japanese release, due out November 24, 2010). The 17th song has finally been released, so now I can finish this review. "Never Born to Follow" (Also known as "For What May Never Come") was uploaded Friday on Youtube by TheABNation. The long wait created a lot of hype among fans for the song. It's my favorite B-Side of AB III, but it didn't meet the hype. "Never Born to Follow" is, shockingly, about a girl (This is the first song Tremonti and Kennedy have written/released with Alter Bridge being about a relationship). The intro is amazing, as is the first verse. The second and fourth verse has a harmonic "Whoah, Whoah" after each line. Some fans are calling this generic and cliche, but like it myself. It adds character to the song, in my opinion. This song is different from the rest of AB III, so I understand why it's a B-Side, it doesn't fit the general mood. The breakdown and the bridge is the highlight of the song. A very Tremonti-esque outro solo, and Kennedy hits yet another insanely high note. As stated earlier, this is my favorite B-Side.
