Lurker

Lord Taleas was Pegasus Valley's champion. Leading the military of the duchy, he had brought Duke F'lar's reign into a glorious new age of prosperity for the valley. The golden age was once again upon us. In return, his grace had promised Taleas a contracted office in the Dragonspine Consulate to the lands in the South. After days of preparing for travel and establishing caretakers for his commission and modest estate in Pegasus Valley, Taleas thought to himself. It had been many days since he fled his family's abode and became Lurker, thief of the night. That boy, from long ago, was a lost youth. Today, Taleas stood tall, a proven man, and a noble by virtue of his own actions.

His whole life was ahead of him. Never again would he stalk the streets at night searching for scraps of bread to eat, and sleeping in abandoned wine casks out in the fields. Taleas was on his way to the crown lands of Dragonspine! Only the fates would know where he would end up. The town's bell sounded noon, which could mean only one thing; it was time for lunch!

Taleas had already dismissed his cook, with a modest severance gift. Fear struck his heart, as he realized he would have to prepare his own food! The horror he felt was indescribable, though passing. He had heard of a dish described by his bandit band in days past in which scraps of meet were settled betwixt slices of bread. On any other day, it is possible a lord might feel ashamed at entertaining such a crass and strange lunch, but today was a good day, and Taleas would dine on a sandwich if it killed him!

Returning to his study, sated, Taleas was startled by a rustling beneath his desk papers. Through the open window, perhaps chased in by his cat, had apparently come a small bird. There was a sparrow lying on his desk. There were never birds in his house; the incense drove them away. What could drive this bird into his home? Did it know he was leaving? Taleas was never one for the old days of candles and swamps; he carried the bird outside and released it into the skies.
