I'm opening this thread to discuss my favourite HP topic: Rupert Grint. I think he's a wonderfully talented young man and I hope he continues to grow and shine like the star he is. You can read his reviews here. |

I was wondering how long it would take you.
Of course, you know I agree all the way around.

Yeah, cgold , you beat me to it. I didn´t want to be too obvious in my Rupert-obsession, although you all know of course. What can I say, Rupert is a natural talent. He is the most talented of the young cast, IMO. I think he is very good as a comical actor, his comical timing had been commented on already (can´t remember who it was, Heyman? A director? Kloves?). But I think he has shown in the very few instances they gave him a chance in the HP movies, that he can do the more dramatic things as well. His venture outside HP, Driving Lessons, is a really good indicator of what Rupert is able to. He comes across as a very grounded young man, who does not get big -headed because of his popularity. On the contrary, he seems to be gobsmacked by all the attention. I found his shyness always endearing, but he seems to have lost a bit of that over the last year. Not that that is a bad thing. He does grow into himself and he gets the recognition for his work. That boost his confidence. That makes me hope he is a bit more open in interviews when OotP promotion comes around than he has been in the GoF era. |

I just managed to watch the Moviefone "Unscripted" interview with Dan, Rupert and Emma (luckily someone put it on YouTube, because the actual website wouldn't let me watch it). Anyway, it was an adorable interview and Rupert was just hilarious. So many funny moments with him. His answer to the question about crazy rumours was just classic "I was going to be an oompa loompa" Oh and talking about his fear of spiders, "I think I'd cry if one came near me" "It's a serious fear" I loved his reaction to the prospect of kissing Emma, "Maybe one of us will die" "You'd rather die than kiss me?" I also laughed out loud when Dan was talking about the fan that tried to climb into the car and Emma was shocked that they just drove off, "So you just left her there on the pavement?" "No, it wasn't a hit and run!" Such a cute interview.Oh, and as someone who has watched "The Little Mermaid" at least 50 times, I have to say that Rupert's the only one who got it right. Sebastian is the crab not the fish. Sorry, I just had to say that. |

I agree SaraElizabeth. That interview was amazing. Certainly one of the best interviews they've ever given. Rupert and Dan had me cracking up the entire time and I loved Emma's voice and hurt when she said "You'd rather die than kiss me" LOL. They are fantastic together. |

I loved that interview! It was so cute. I like how the three of them have really become good friends. And Rupert was adorable as always. Have to say I agree with him about spiders - I'd be on that chair with him if I saw one! ![]() Oh - cgold - do you still have the link for that MTV live bit with Rupert? I couldn't watch it that day and I forgot to save it before COS went down.

I've noticed that Rupert comes to the interviews prepared with specific "talking points". For the Driving Lessons interviews, he talked about his own attempts to pass the driving test. Now he talks about the ice cream truck. It's very smart and professional of him to have an unusual story because it helps the interviewer get the conversation started. It also serves to give the audience a glimpse into his life without giving too much personal information. |

I don't think Rupert's as calculating as all that. I think he bought an ice-cream truck for his pleasure and possible business and that's the main part of the story. When asked if he bought anything interesting, he mentioned it and then Emma expanded on his explanation. Except for that time I have listened to almost all interviews and unless he's asked about it he doesn't really bring it up so I don't think there was any plan there. It's just something the press brings up just like they did with his driving because it's something interesting about him to talk about. About your talking points issue. I actually do believe you on this one. Rupert tends to answer the same questions the exact same way and if a question that's not the usual is brought up he's very vague to the point of a non-answer. It's almost as if he has in his head all that he's going to say and he's not adding anything else. He'll just say "I don't know" and smile a bit and then say "Yeah" to anything that's not the usual. He answered a bit more during the Trio interview which is why it was so fun as well. Listen to the Craig Ferguson interview. It was quite fun. Craig is hilarious, in my opinion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBRbz_ZSTiU Also, Rupert opened the FAO Schwarz store in NYC a couple days and it was madness. You can watch a bit on it on this Access Hollywood clip. http://video.accesshollywood.com/player/?id=0#videoid=129023 |

It's not so much calculating as strategic. Rupert isn't as naturally outgoing as Dan or Emma so he has to work harder to talk easily with strangers. So it seems he's developed interesting anecdotes that give the interviewer something to work with. This way Rupert's prepared and doesn't stumble over his answers, which as you've observed, happens to him when the interview goes off-topic. His tactic is a good one has been recommended to me by public speaking instructors. I'm a natural introvert and can recognize it in Rupert. I do think Rupert bought the ice cream truck because he wanted to, and I didn't mean to imply he bought the truck just so he'd have something to talk about. It's just that I noticed the similarity to his interviews during Driving Lessons. On both occasions Rupert had something to talk about that was interesting - his own failure at the driving test and his purchase of an ice cream truck - that deflected the interviewer and filled the time. I watched the Craig Ferguson clip and it was quite good. I don't like Ferguson as an interviewer. The interview becomes a jumping-off point to showcase Ferguson's attempt to be a comedian, so the interview is more about Ferguson than the guest. Rupert did a good job being a straight man to Ferguson's hyperactivity. Rupert is more himself when he's with Dan and Emma. Those are people he's comfortable with and he can go off-topic with them. There was one interview I saw where Emma was talking about how the three of them don't listen to stories in the media and lean on each other when something is reported. I think that was an indirect reference to the impression that Rupert's role as Ron makes him third out of the three of them. Ron's character has been cut to ribbons in the movie and I think Emma was saying that the three of them know Ron's character in the movies doesn't translate to the relationship that Dan, Emma and Rupert have. |

Having watched Rupert for months I'm just not able to agree. Since it's something I'm desperate for I'd have noticed if he gave anecdotes during interviews. He does not. He's really interested in his ice-cream truck and he'll talk a little more on that but not much really. I also don't really see him going out on a limb to develop anything for reporters other than to make sure he has answers to certain questions like I said before. If you think about it, what anecdotes have you heard from Rupert? I enjoyed the Craig Ferguson because Rupert doesn't talk a lot and he made everything funny by giving jokes. I guess maybe another interviewer would have better luck with Rupert but I think they'd have to be really good and I just can't think of any that would be. Maybe Conan could have done a better job. Anyway, USA Today did an celeb watch did an interview with Rupert. They tour the HP museum and predicted Deathly Hallows: http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/celebw.../celebwatch.htm Here were his responses for Deathly Hallows: 1. Who will live, who will die? A. Grint guesses that Harry and evil Lord Voldemort meet their maker. (As for fans on the site, the vast majority think both live.) Explains Grint: "I think Harry will die because of the prophecy in (Order of the Phoenix) that Harry or Voldemort will die." But believing that Rowling couldn't allow Harry to die in vain, Grint goes on to guess that "if Harry does die, Voldemort can't live, can he?" For his part, Grint is willing to take one for the team. "I wouldn't mind dying," he says. "It would be a cool scene to shoot." 2. Is Snape good or evil? A. Grint thinks Severus Snape — a Hogwarts potions professor/Death Eater/Order of the Phoenix member — is good, but in too deep with Voldemort (34% of fans agree; an equal number say he's good and a Phoenix spy). "I'm really uncertain," admits Grint, who has been flip-flopping on this very issue since the beginning. "I've got a funny feeling that he's good. He is quite nasty, but he saved Harry's life, so that shows he's a little more human." 3. Will Hogwarts reopen? A. "Definitely, I think," says Grint of the school of witchcraft and wizardry, the site of a heartbreaking murder in the sixth book (95% of fans agree). "It just has to," Grint says. "The school and all the history is what the books are all about." 4. Who winds up with whom? A. It'll be a family affair, Grint believes, with his Ron cuddling up to pal Hermione, while Harry hooks up with Ron's sister, Ginny (37% of fans have picked Ron and Hermione; 28%, Harry and Ginny). "Harry's sort of a Weasley anyhow since my parents have taken him in," says Grint. "And there's definitely something there between Ron and Hermione," adds Grint, who in real life is currently uncoupled. But kissing co-star Emma Watson (Hermione), he hypothesizes, "is going to be a little bit awkward because we've known each other so long." 5. Where are the Horcruxes? A. Grint believes the mysterious fragmented bits of Voldemort's soul that help him attain immortality may be hidden somewhere within Hogwarts (top fan choice: Godric's Hollow, 23%). "They could be in Azkaban (prison)," Grint theorizes, "but every year something crazy happens at Hogwarts. First there was Fluffy the three-headed dog, and in The Chamber of Secrets there was the massive basilisk (snake)." So, theorizes Grint, the possibility of even more evil lurking within Hogwarts' walls is highly likely. 6. Will Voldemort be defeated? A. Having already guessed in Question 1 that Voldemort will perish, Grint goes on to explain that "Voldemort sort of always dies and comes back to life. He has been surviving, but I think this time he's going to die for good. It just makes sense." (80% of fans agree.) 7. What are the Deathly Hallows? A. Grint hasn't a clue as to the meaning behind Rowling's cryptic title. He believes (and 60% of fans agree) that readers will find out "somewhere in the middle" of the book. "I'd guess it's something very scary that has a strong connection to how it all ends." |

Ahhh! Just had to pop in and say that I just watched Driving Lessons and it i was positively BRILLENT!!!! Rubert was stellar! I was holding my sleeping baby so I had to muffle most of my laughs, I can't wait to watch it again when I can burst out laughing. It was bugging me to think of who Evie reminded me up and then, she yelled and I am like! MRS. WEASLEY! I love you! My favorite line is "And, thank you for having me." and "I've come for my boy!" or and "I am a poet, I understand the power of words." The ending shot was spectacular Oh and my daughter just learned to clap this morning for the first time and when she woke up, she went up to the TV during the movie and started clapping when Rupert's face was on the screen over and over again...no lie!!! I think my 11th month old has a crush. |

Ah, you have a clever baby. And with a good taste in men at that. ![]() And yes, Driving Lessones is a wonderful movie. I love Julie Walters. Even before she was in the HP movies. I would put her in the same league as Helen Mirren, Judy Dench, Brenda Blethyn, Maggie Smith. A very fine English actress. And if Rupert´s management is worth it´s money, I expect, in a couple of years time, Rupert to be one of the very fine English actors. He has it in him. |
