So WHY do you like FF VII so much? And WHAT exactly makes it a good game? Can you come up with anything better than "I just like it" or "It was really influential"? Right now, I read your posts and I don't see a fan. I just see someone with a major, alpha-grade case of denial.

Xantar for me it boils down to a matter of preference, and of taste. Which I do not in any way disagree with FF6 being your favorite. The game is freakin fantastic. In my opinion I feel that any of these games in this series can merit a consideration for being someone's favorite final fantasy game. Each game is unique, and different people will relate each game differently. My argument isn't that the game is flawless. My argument is that the story is my favorite in the final fantasy series.

I also see why FF7 has such a broad appeal, and no its not just the story. But the story is the main thing I personally liked about the game. I've said that multiple times already.

More specifically I liked the plots pacing, and how things progressed quickly. I liked how it actively involved the gamer, and the way the story unfolds to reveal many busy separate plotlines. I enjoyed the whole "rebel alliance" role in the beginning, and I feel it deeply involves the player in the whole politics of the ff7 world early.

In regards to the world of FF7 I loved the way it was designed. From the background details, to the variety of cities, townes and other landscapes to visit. From Nibelheim to Cosmo Canyon no two places shared the same designs either. Furthermore I love how the themes in the game are generally darker.

I feel the graphics were solid with the gross exception to the in game character animations. But the in battle, and background graphics had plenty of attention to smaller details. Again no two environments in FF7 are the same.

Again I liked the general attention to smaller details. The character concept designs are creative and original which brings a lot of flavor to their individual personalities.

I thoroughly enjoyed the materia system as well. I tend to lean on games that give the user a lot of flexibility to allow for deeper customizing. Being able to equip whichever materia I wanted, and then to subsequently buy, hunt, and grow materia alone was entertaining. The sheer amount of materia was fun to collect, organize and arrange for maximum usage as well. The gamer is on a constant easter egg hunt to make their characters better.

Speaking of easter eggs, FF7 boasts many which only adds to its replay value. It took several replays (without a guide) to find the numerous hidden characters, materia, bosses, weapons, and side quests. Basically game mastery demanded a lot of time invested.

So let me review what I have liked so far.

Music: What can be said about the music that hasn't already been said? Its upbeat, its involved, and its epic in scope. My little brother is a double major music graduate from the Peabody conservatory of music and he STILL can't help but gush about the music theory. 9/10

Graphics (game was released in 97): The pre-rendered backgrounds, battle animations, and cgi are of first rate quality. The world map, and in game characters look a bit outdated even during the time of its release. But even those graphics are a vast improvement to the graphics in the games preceeding it. There is a lot of attention to small details, and no two places look the same. I'd rate the graphics in general as a 7.5/10.

Gameplay: The materia system is flexible and intuitive. Its designed to give the player a lot of ways to personalize their fighting style. Furthermore the time it takes to collect, master each materia, and all the materia combinations to make will carry you throughout the entire game. The limit break system in this game is my favorite "hyper mode" of any final fantasy. 8/10

Story:The game's plot is deep and typical of Square's prior efforts and is quite epic. Square takes great pride in its storytelling abilities and uses a number of flashback sequences, and loads of rendered sequences and pre-rendered FMV to add greatly to the mood and emotion of the story. Arguably the best story of any in the final fantasy series. 10/10

In conclusion its not that I feel this game is vastly superior to others in this series. Its just my favorite personally. From the variety, and depth to the characters, to the vast all encompassing plot. I even liked the quirky characters like Bugenhagen, Cait Sith, and Heidegger.

Especially Bugenhagen....

The only thing I really liked about the games was the character renders in battle. They were very much polygons, but instead of looking "blocky", they looked "stylized".
Of course, the battles themselves didn't thril me that much, as even after hours I still somehow manage to screw up who I was attacking or healing.
I really don't mean to harp on your favorite FF Mal, but the game makes me tear my hair out. Always has. Yet, conceptually, I like it, and I desperatly want them to remake it so they can fix the fucker and I can actually play it.

So let's see... what Final Fantasy games have I played... 1...2...3(I think) 7, 9, and 10. Again, I've only completed 9. Got to the Calm lands in 10, but I never got around to finishing it... other new games took precedence I guess. I liked 10 though, switching out the characters was fun for me, and while I know you coudl theoretically give every character every ability... I really feel like that would take far to much effort and be a waste of spheres. I'd probably only take the stat upgrades if I get around to finishing it.

Oh, and yes, I've never played 8. Ever. Not for any particular reason, just never played it.
THIS is my side, THIS is the demiltarized zone, and THAT is your side.

"Good and Evil" is too complicated. I prefer, "Us and Them".

Well I understand my opinion might be a little weird, and I have a hard time spelling it out. But I am the type of gamer that likes to max things out. The longer it takes to do that, the better in my opinion.

I know that may sound weird. But most other games can take 10-12 hours to beat playing straight through. I like being able to put 6 months into a game and max every possible stat in the meantime. It may be totally unnecessary, its just something I like doing. In that sense I have immensely enjoyed games like W.o.W and Oblivion in that there is no end to the game. My only knock against those two games is that I don't feel like I can sit back and observe the game as much. You always have to be right in the grill of it.

In that sense I enjoyed FF10, and 12 with their respective game mechanics. I think its quite an accomplishment to complete the sphere grid on the character, or to have learned every license.

Accomplishments are the measurable reward for playing the game. If you can't finish a game at its highest possible level, then its probably time to move on. But if you enjoy it enough to painstakingly accomplish everything then you have an accomplishment worth remarking about.

Actually the only FF I haven't maxed out was FFX-2, and that one is just not even worth talking about. I did get deep into that game, but actually gave up on the Bevelle 100 level dungeon. Maybe I could finish it, but I don't imagine working up the motivation to try. Its an obscenely absurd concept for a level, and so irritatingly built on avoiding random encounters with monsters you'd have to cheat to get past.

Other than that, I can say I maxed everything in 1-10, and 12. Throw in tactics, and tactics advance to boot. I got into 11, and may get into it again but only got to level 20. 13 looks nasty good, too good really to be true.
