I'm reading a FAQ from gamefaqs.com the other day and came across some interesting translation changes. Now, I know that dubbing and translating japanese to english is difficult at best. So I really do understand a certain degree of americanization that happens. But I normally found myself prefering the original material somuch more. Heres a for instance; In FFX Kimarhi's ultimate weapon the "spirit lance" was called the "Longinus" in Japanese. Obviously spirit lance and longinus isn't a direct translation. Furthermore it completely alters the meaning behind the name for the weapon. You see Longinus was one of the roman soldiers who pierced Christ in the side with a spear. Thus you have a weapon capable of piercing the divine. Which to most of us would have made Kimarhi's ultimate weapon that much better. I mean spirit lance? Why not call it super javelin, or big spear? The name also matches the theme for the majority of the ultimate weapon names. Either the weapon has some kind of historical/spiritual significance, or a past final fantasy reference. I also know that most American FF gamers might take offence to that name. But would they really? Do you guys find that name offensive? What other Final Fantasy elements have been lost in translation? |

may be a strange thought, but most translaters probably don't know the story behind some names, so they just rename it into something they believe sounds cooler. There are probably hundreds of examples like this around (the "tales of" series anyone? Streetfighter?). The translators job is to translate, not to know any character stories (name), weapon stories (historical events maybe), etc etc. True, it WOULD be nice to see it happen, but face it, translating rpg's is a bitch in a lot of cases *remembers the Bahamut lagoon translations*. And on a sidenote...I never like kimahri enough to even care >.>. And certainly not after the horrible butterfly sidequest, those critters STILL give me nightmares D: |

Street Fighter never really had any translation problems. At least, none that were at a time when it mattered(lol at "You must defeat Shen Long") I also don't recall anything of that caliber happening in the Tales games either. Care to enlighten me as to that? If you mention that the GBA game didn't have the "Fucks like a Tiger" line I will give you warnings like you wouldn't BELIEVE. Anyway, this usually happens only because of offensive material, such as religious references, or in some cases a parent company editing material to lower the ESRB rating(Nintendo editing the hell out of everything in the SNES era, for example). In America(Where I'm assuming the large % of people here are from), our country was BUILT by the most uptight religious nutcases in the history of everything. And a lot of that nutcasery lingers today, and thus why we have the "Soccer Mom" sect trying to ban games and other media left and right. However more awesome it would have been to have a weapon named "Longinus", Square decided to change it to avoid anyone calling them out for Religious this-and-that. They've done it before and I assume they'll continue to do it until the soccer mom clique is gone form earth for good. (If you really want a game where you can use Longinus play Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. Atlus and NIS don't give a shit what soccer moms think. Which is why I luv them so.) To get back to the main topic, the only serious case of censorship I can think of in recent days was in La Pucelle, which got censored up the ASS. The game is about a bunch of nuns and priests going at it with a satan-worshipping cult, and yet all references to religion were taken out. Yes, you read that right. All crosses in the churches and on the character's outfits are gone, MANY, MANY references to religious icons were edited, and the big scene where Prier gets crucified by poseessed villagers is edited so taht she's just tied to a stake(With her arms held in the air, haha). Also, Chain-smoker and badass sharpshooter Croix has had his cigarette edited out of all his sprites and pictures in the guide and manual. So not only are there basically HOLES in the official art for the game, but any time he kills a monster, he takes a drag, stomps out, and relights NOTHING. Which is kinda comical to watch, really. I <3 the big pic in the guide where he's holding his hand over his mouth "cool-style", but there's no cigarette in his hand. So it looks like he's just holding his hand over his mouth for no reason when he's firing the gun. Oh, Mastiff. Nobody will ever buy anything from you ever again. |

I recall reading something about the tales of destiny 2 game (I refuse to call it Tales of eternia. My fucking cover says Tales of Destiny 2, so fuck it), where stuff was explained with balir and meredy's mother. There was also something that (supposedly) was edited out between farah and reid at some point (not the cave scene). But again, this is only stuff I name up from what I saw. My japanese isn't exactly advanced enough to say I can see the misstakes :p.
The translation no, but editing yes. Mike Bison anyone ;)? |

1. Tales of Destiny 2 is a PS2 game, ser. The actual name is Tales of Eternia. That's why there's a Tales of Eternia anime, and Tales of Eternia on the PSP. I don't care what your box says, it's wrong. Much like the SNES version of FF6 is NOT FF3 and Sword of Mana is not Final Fantasy Adventure. 2. That had to be done to avoid costly lawsuits. |

I do consider myself to be a fan of Atlus games. Brigandine is on my top ten favorite games list, so naturally I should feel inclined to check out Disgaea too. |

Speaking of the new Disgaea I just picked it up a couple days ago and it is downright awesome. There's been some minor foul langauge such as 'ass' and 'hell'. The whole dialogue so far has been great and I love Adell and Rozalin so far. |

Tales of Destiny 1&2 are playstation titles and pretty fun games at that, the first one being better IMO. I'm a big fan of the Tales series but I wouldn't notice any real translation issue. I'm not up on Japanese and I seldom play imports. But changing the name of a game is nothing new. ToD 2 was probably called that because it was the second Tales game on the PS much like FFIII/VI was the third Final Fantasy released to the states. (I don't count Mystic Quest) The worst part about the translation of ToD2 was the voice acting it was horrible. I would have much preferred the original Japanese with English text. Some games need to be censored because of our country's moral values. Take Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit everywhere else) for example. The game was geared to an older demographic hence it's Mature rating but had it been released in its uncensored form it would have received an AO rating. There is partial nudity in Indigo Prophecy (a shower scene with Carla where her breasts are seen for a brief time) the funny thing about the censorship though is how they censored the woman's breasts. They simply removed the nipples. I laughed when I got to that scene. In Fahrenheit however the nipples are firmly in place and there a two sex scenes in the game one of which is interactive. In this case censor ship was the main thing as far as I know there were no translation issues besides the name change which was done to avoid confusion with Moore's movie. I'm sure there will always be translation issues with games much like animes. We live on different standards and until those standards change we'll just have to live with it. |

Dalmar: I'm telling you, Tales of Destiny 2 is a PS2 game. The "Tales of Destiny 2" that exists(only in the US) on PS1 is actually Tales of Eternia. I can get pictures if you really, really want me to. Malagossa: You'd be surprised. I don't actually know if that game itself was edited but you'd seriously be surprised at some games that have had content edited, even if it's minute. I mean, I found out Darkstalkers 3 was edited a few months ago, and I'd had the game for well over a year and thought it was pretty untouched. (I mean, for god's sake one of the levels is called "Fetus of God" where you are, essentially, fighting inside a woman's uterus next to an mutated unborn infant who wakes and destroys the universe when you win your match. This remained in the game, but Demitri wasn't allowed to spray blood when he does his Neck Bite move...) And everyone in this thread needs to go play Disgaea and Disgaea 2 if they haven't played them already. I don't care if you have to pay $200 for the both of them, you need to buy them and play them immediately. They are the quintessential Atlus titles. |

So just for clarification's sake TST, Tales of Eternia is the actual name of the ToD2 released for ps1. The one released for ps2, Tales of Destiny 2, is the actual REAL sequel to the first Tales of Destiny that originally came out for ps1? And Tales of Eternia was just a branch off of the series? |

Yes. Eternia was renamed Destiny 2 in the US because Namco felt it would sell better due to name recognition. Then they ACTUALLY made a sequal to Destiny called "Tales of Destiny 2" on the PS2. Is this really that hard? It's like the FF renumbering, only with a word instead of a number. |

I beleive you Trippy. I'll have to look for the real Tales of Destiny 2 then. I have played Disgaea and I will eventually get the second one but I'm aiming to complete the Xenosaga trillogy first. I don't know if Xenogears was censored or not though it wouldn't surprise me if it was. I know there was some contraversy over it's religous content and some of that may have been censored. |
