I'm not going to start questioning your motives because I think you had the best intentions in writing this. But seriously. Ryan Clark was a real person. His parents are out there right now putting pieces together. This is not the time to turn his life into a work of fiction. It serves no purpose. Wait a few years and then see if the subject still moves you to write something. But for now, I'm not even going to critique your story because it comes from all the wrong places. |

Ummm. No. You missed the point. I never said that you are vilifying anyone. I never said that anything you wrote here was offensive. What I did say is that your whole story is coming from all the wrong places. If you are so fascinated by what happened, then make an effort to find out more about it. This here is nothing more than a piece of speculative fiction written by someone who's making everything up. And the problem with that is it's about a real person. You simply do not go writing your fanciful recreation of what this real person went through. You particularly do not do this for a traumatic event that ended his life. Co-opting a real person into your own imaginary creation trivializes his life and the event that ended it. The fact that you have chosen to make up the chain of events rather than trying to figure out what happened and then try to accurately portray it shows a fundamental lack of regard to the real event and the real people involved. You say you are intrigued, but when you write this story, you are showing that you would rather indulge in a flight of fancy than treat the event with any kind of basic respect. That's what I mean when I say this story came from the wrong places. It wasn't written to pay tribute to what happened. It was written to indulge your need to fantasize. You can try to protest to me that you really do respect the people who died and the tragedy that happened, but if that was true, you would be writing what really happened. It's not that anybody is offended. It's just that you have not approached this with integrity. And if you don't understand this basic idea, then you have no business writing anything. |

Well then tell me this: if you don't know everything that happened, why are you writing this? |

Right. You're doing this to indulge your fascination with the story. Stop kidding yourself by telling me how much research you've done and how much you've read. You aren't doing a journalism piece here. You aren't trying to create a report of the truth. You're writing fiction. If that weren't true, you would be taking an entirely different approach to writing this piece altogether. Here's the test you should be thinking about: if you were to walk up to Ryan Clark's family right now and tell them that you are writing a fictional story inspired by his death, do you think they would find that appropriate? Here's what I keep saying over and over and what you continually can't seem to understand: your story is fictional. I don't care how much research you've done into the event. I don't care how many interviews you've read and how many crime scene photos you've looked at. You are writing this story from the point of view of Ryan Clark. You are making up thoughts and actions and attributing them to him. That makes your story fictional. You simply cannot proceed on this basis and claim that you are somehow trying to write an account of the truth. And that means this is inappropriate. And if you think what you are writing here is in any way even slightly comparable to writing a scientific report, then you're even dumber than I thought. Even 10 year olds can understand the difference. |
