So, the Swedish found a new planet that may or may not resemble Earth's atmosphere and life system. It's 20.4 light years away, in the habitable zone of its sun, and a bit more massive than Earth making the gravity there approximately 2.2 times ours. So, think there is anything living there? Think we'll one day take it over if there isn't anything living there? Think we'll get to explore it within this generation? I for one think it would be incredibly interesting if the planet was inhabited. I'd like to see aliens in my life time. But it makes me wonder whether or not the aliens would look anything like us if the planet had the same climate and atmosphere as Earth. I'm no space and science major, so I don't know all there is to know about it, I'm just curious. I've read up on it, but there isn't much to read at the moment. I assume that if there were animals there they'd be larger and stronger than animals here because of the more intense gravity. So, if the humans/humanoids there were stronger than us, would they have developed only using their muscle, or would they be as intelligent as us, or more so if they're species had been around longer. I'm just typing my ideas here, so I'll let others comment, if they want to anyway. I know we only have like six active members left and all. |

Well, the whole concept of aliens developing on that planet would simply mean they would be BUILT stronger, not that they were "stronger" than they would be here, of course, and most of us would barely be able to stand if we went there.... But.. basically look at it as like Superman. They'd be built much more solidly than we are, and if they came here, their muscles would give them comparitvley insane strength. The other possibilty, is that the creatures would be SMALLER. Like, for example. Gravity is twice as strong? So everythign would be half the size. Same reason ants arn't bigger than they are. If they were, say..... 10 times that size, they wouldn't be able to suport their own weight. So, the average humanoid alien would be.... 3 feet tall or so. But they'd probably have equivalent strength to an adult earthling. And what I haven't actually said is that the gravity would have no affect on their inteligence. That's like aliens on a planet with HALF our gravity wondering if we think or are just all muscle. And, on the initial subject of us habitating it........... I doubt it. I really don't see us beign able to live there comfortably unless one of us was born ther. in which case the gravity woudl stunt our growth and increase our muslce mass, making us look something like the dwarfs of fantasy. So, it'd be possible, but he'd need somethin akin to an exoskeleton to increase our own ability to withstand the gravity before we could attempt to live there. Or, I coudl be overestimating jsut how hard twice the gravity would pull us down. But, twice the gravity means double the wieght, doesn't it? |

Mako, I've never seen your keyboard kick your ass so hard. But yeah, I agree with you for the most part. I didn't mention their stunted growth but thats just because I didn't mention it. I had this discussion with a substitute teacher the other day and we noted that. And by not as intelligent as us, I didn't really mean they wouldn't be smart because of their strength. I meant more along the lines of how long they've existed and how smart they'd be compared to us in that sense. Also, I don't think we'll try to move there in the next few years. 20 light years is a LONG way, so we'd need to develop better space travel, and by then perhaps we'll develop something to counteract the gravity. I don't know really. But technology is advancing more and more rapidly, so in forty years when I'm almost 60, who knows what crazy technology will be around. |

Well, in our atmosphere, we have 1 atm (Atmospheres) pushing down on us at all times. 1 atm is equivalent to... what was it again? Like 14 psi? That's 14 pounds per inch. That's at all times. Unless you go in the mountains, then there's less. So a place with twice the gravity must have at least 2 atm pushing on you, for about 28 psi. How well do you think your body will preform with an extra 14 psi constantly pushing in all directions on you? I don't think mine would do very well. We may visit, but never inhabit. |

Irrelevant. Scuba divers and even people just swiming underwater regularly experiance the pressure of more than one atmoshpere. I think it's an extra one for every 10 feet you go down, and I've been down below fifty and felt fine. What we're talkign about ar Gs. As in "Pulling 4 Gs" Which I think is enough to make someone black out... but that's in a totaly different situation. It'd be more akin to what keeps you pressed up against the wall in those spinny amusment park rides. |

Yeah, you felt fine... but for how long? Have you ever stayed under there for weeks at a time? Anyways, I don't know if you would feel like "two G's" are pulling on you or not. I guess it's possible... |

*refrains from being an asshole* You could survive in 2 Gs but keep in mind you're only gonna live to be 30 when you die of a heart attack. |
![]() Ok, you caught me. I'm actually Xantar. I hacked Dragon's account because he's being an ass. Dragon: You don't have the respect for me because you are entered the forum into a contest where it is impossible for one to survive unless they are the one survivor. You speak as if setting up a situation in which to make my fail by stating that I cannot live. Therefor my logic proves that over yours and you are making a direct threat on my physical life. Xantar: I think you mean Xantar: "You made me accidentally the whole fleshlight!" Dragon: ..... Dragon: Sometimes I just love you. --- Shadyshark So I found out that this girl on a kids show I thought was cute was actually about 16 at the time of filming, so I feel better about it now. Dragon of DTT ... how does that make you feel better? Shadyshark because that's legal. Dragon of DTT you think a 16 year old is hot, thats creepy as fuck Shadyshark in some states at least. Dragon of DTT >.> you're like, 8 years older than that Shadyshark never mind. | |

Well that's just until we live there for a few thousand years. Then we'll adapt to it and live to be a hundred so we can fuck that planet over too! |

Personally, I don't think there's a point in even thinking of inhabiting it. And if I should have to explain why, I'll be disappointed. 20.4 light years. Pfft. |

So I guess Wolverine would be able to survive in there being as he already weighs umpteen hundred pounds. He's used to carrying a lot of weight around. Incidentally, although gravity does not directly affect intelligence, you have to keep in mind that big brains actually suck up a lot of energy. If we as a species had brains half the size they are now, we would have left over energy to put into something else - like big leg muscles. The point is animals on a planet with twice our gravity will have to have muscles that are twice as strong in order to get along as we do. And that might mean that they won't have many resources to develop enormous, soccer-ball-like heads with heavy brains in them. |

Well, I would also assume that beings on a planet with heavier gravity would have a denser, stronger bone structure than our own. Even with powerful muscles, it's likely that we wouldn't be able to do a single jumping jack without fracturing something. |
