Christmas is Coming
[ * * * * * * * ]
A brush of air fell to his side. A sword sliced though a parcel of air. A sword and gun later the battle was over not too long ago. But at what cost? How he lived that moment, the swords missed him by clear inches, his sweating hands held a triggered gun. Clearly outmatched it may have seemed a foolish battle. However this was not true. A portal lay open leading near him to some far off place. He layed down on the floor his thoughts no longer clear now lamenting not just one man’s death but three others. No, he had thought it over again, he had been outmatched by a mere sword but the question was how? The sky radiated a fiery fire blaze of the afternoon heat. His questions loomed like clouds drifting endlessly leaving humorless bitter thoughts in his mind. How he had killed them with just one sword? How he had set a giant chasm in the portal and tried to make them fall for their death was only a matter of what master of portals could do. How three others outnumbered him by four. These masters of portals were as strong as three humans. Why didn’t he surrender when there were four of them? Why did he have to die? Four was no match. Did he think that he would die in a proper manner? Did he think honor mattered more? It could have been simpler than that, he could have surrendered. He looked at the yellow skinned man and the opened dimension in a sort of demented state. The portal open lead to a bottomless pit which the man had opened with magic. But the more he analyzed this it seemed stranger. Something the man left behind was a key that was golden and when the man died he told him amidst all this strangeness that it could open any door he wanted in the entire world.

He handed the key to Dorrin as if it were the devil key to the world. Familiar in the lore of the Chimera religion, the people at whom they were at war with, he knew the key could open any door. But that was not real power to him. It was a treasured heirloom of the Chimerian dynasty that was power itself. The fact that he had the key he knew could evoke fear in the entire Chimerian world with whom they were at war.

He looked at Kaya whom in his opinion had questionable motives having betrayed her own Chimera people now on his side. She was like her chimera people, with wings and a lion-like complexion and deep with convictions. This chimera being was a royal adviser to the king now. He decided to test her skill in judgment.

“I believe that an inquisition will lead to the finding of the Chimera key that so interests the king of this land,” he said intentionally misleading her. He had not intention of telling anyone of the key just yet, what the soldier had given him. “I recommend we continue open war so that the people will fearfully submit to our rule and we can question those that may have seen the key. What are your thoughts?”

He looked at Kaya and signaled to open a portal.

“I will lend you my aid and open a portal. I think we need council with the king. Do you wish to travel to the king,” she said. “It was just only ten days ago we declared ceasefire, open war to my people I fear will never get us the key the main reason for this war. The secrets of us the Chimera people cannot be taken by force, but you and the Wester people have never understood that.”

A huge blue portal opened. They walked in. Kaya walked followed by Dorrin. They both agreed one thing, seeing this king. On the other side the soldiers curtsied to the appearance of the Dorrin and Kaya the master of portals. Her yellow lion skin provided a nice contrast to Dorrin’s pale skin. Dorrin had on his mind to visit the king. Looking favorably on one such Chimera was hard but it meant something that the one he traveled with was an old croon of the king.

“The chimera people have much to blame for this war. They have killed our people. They have vandalized and pilfered us, they have given a reason for the king to fear them. These masters of portals,” said Dorrin.

“Yes I understand your stance with my people Dorrin.”

“You know, I always wondered why you betrayed your people Kaya of the Chimera religion,” Dorrin said. It means a lot to feel like you belong somewhere. “And I wonder if you feel that you belong with us. I remember being only a boy when I saw the king the first time. He had a knack of gathering the most powerful people on his side. That meant you and that meant me. I felt a sense of belonging then. So I made it my very intent to become the most powerful man than even the king. Do you have that sense of belonging Kaya?”

“It’s something that only I would know. I dislike the ideals of our religion if we cannot cooperate to find a treasured heirloom. If I must betray the Chimera people then so be it but I believe though that it will answer questions concerning our war. The key I firmly believe will end this war. Therefore I belong on your side.”

“What would you describe that answer as being then? That something that will end the war?”

“I call it inner peace which will make our people come to peace at long last.”

“And I call that feeling dam impossible. This war against your people has taken quite a toll on our kind. You masters of portals are equally deadly as the guns we carry. This feeling of inner peace will never arrive with such deadly force.”

“For humans this feeling of inner peace is impossible yes but I sense some beings have that primordial instinct.”

“Like our king which matters? Well the king is full of fear locked up in his castle for two decades what does that tell you?”

“His soul is incomplete to the Chimera, that’s all it means to me and you. Not that his soul is full of fear. Humans are capable of having inner peace.”

“Ah, yes the king he’s very interesting. Now let’s head towards high tower. His voice should be the same after all this time and after all these years of war.”

They walked the yellow bricked path that would lead them to the high tower and eventually to the king. As they went by they noticed the wall that had paintings of every place in the castle. One of them had a portrait of them walking with an almost mirror-like reflection. Two distinct figures appeared of a winged woman with lion yellow skin, and one of a man with shrewd looking eyes thin neck and nose. They were being watched but they were sure the king had an even better view at the top of his tower. The red carpet seemed to be of regal crimson ruby that was set on a red golden path. This golden path was one countless soldiers walked to visit the king bloodied by the tales of their ordeals. Countless swords lined the walls as if this were also a war zone. Tapestries of lions lined the walls. A nice contrast to the strange looking winged chimera people. Its presence was overbearing as pictures were everywhere strewn on the walls.

There was dust and a whirlwind sound blew giving a howling sound like an ancient battle cry. Equally ominous the cool mist of the air gave off a cold touch, the surfaces were cold like ice and equally gave a strange ambience that not too many people ventured here deep in the red lining of carpets. It seemed to be desolate. It had for many years been true that advisors and counselors had walked this path only to give advice on war.

The windows on the walls gave a picturesque view of any battlefield, which soon dissolved into one after another. Every moment was a quickening adrenaline inducing moment of sweet and quick action of swordplay, gun fighting, sorcery and arrow shooting. In one picture the sky was clouded by the Chimerian army. In the other pictures portals after portals opened dragging soldiers into portals only to land later into deep pits. They were very much still at war.
