There are some important things that should be mentioned that go in a story. For instance the writing style. The writing style of each person varies greatly and can distinguish that person?s writing. Writing style and characters are the most important parts a good story needs to do well. Now first writing style. What goes in a style? The way you interpret things. Let us give an example, some writing workshops ask you to interpret certain things and put them in the story. For instance let us take for instance that they demand you should include a shoe in. Then you start interpreting talking about shoes. ¨His shoes were like the weights that keep his soul standing. He traveled anywhere. It was as if the perfect fit of the soles of his shoes had made him comfortable that he could be that one person who could change things because it seemed uncanny how it all fit in one place. Just as strange it seemed destined that just like that, he felt a need inside of him that he needed to change things around him and make himself the perfect person. So he was a believer, a protestor, a rioter, and he wanted change. Change was not static, you had to walk for change. Walking ahead of everything else. He knew that. If not he would walk around uncomfortably like a blind man fumbling not moving and blinder with no messages. He needed to walk even though he was struggling for the first time as is he were invalid, feeling better he walked forward looking what he saw ahead. The horizon, what else, he did not know what was next or ahead.¨ Connect all the things, it can be important, (¨blinder¨ ¨horizon ahead¨) (¨soul¨ ¨sole of his shoes¨) (¨change¨ ¨moving¨) (¨walking forward¨). Protester connects with walking forward. So does rioter and believer. Take in mind that you have to relate your interpretation to real life, do not use empty interpretations or meaningless descriptions. Every line that is written in an interpretation a lot of line hangs on the next just like all the parts of a story need to fall together and be cohesive in meaning, voicing, and thoughts that reflect all meanings of the story or some of them only when interpreted by you. Use plenty of imagery to your advantage. Yes not every writer uses imagery but it can be very powerful and can even help interpret further. ¨The pictures Damon spread over the whole table. Like a hidden window had been discovered on the table they could see the pictures as if they were windows and views to the other world. There was a huge stack of photos black and white that looked still fresh. They were of all the same places he had gone to. One of the numerous photos that stood next to the devoured food was a coffeehouse, where there was a beach house with a green robust garden that had been feed well. Seemed as if we could see right through it as if it were also breathing.¨ As you see it is all about interpreting, that is what makes a writing style. Another thing you can do with writing style which I am not very sure of is not reveal anything and keep things secret as the story moves forward. This can add tension and suspense to a story thus adding more attention and giving a reason to read the story. As long as you give the reader a key reason to go on then they will. Whatever it be writing style, characters, originality, creativity. The beginning should always be strong. Characters. Characters can sometimes be tricky to handle and can tie with voicing of the rest of the story. Basically you want the characters to be as easily identified as possible with as much emotion and sympathy as possible. Emotion can make or break a story. If a story has heart and you identify with the situation, and place yourself in the character as if you had been reading the story unknowingly then it was a success. Characters should always sound the same unless there was a metamorphosis but one thing is for sure, they should have plenty of emotion. Another thing, a character?s actions can tell us how the character thinks. If for instance they rammed their car in a home since they were angry even though they were calm all their life that can tell something and sends a message of who the character was or may have been. (show do not tell. You can do this by showing the actions, the thoughts and what they say which are hidden usually until you finally see and understand who they are). Voicing. The narrator?s voice fits in with the style. You want to make it easier to follow and express each character?s thoughts if that is what you intend to do. The point of view that offers the maximum advantage since it makes the characters more lively in the sense you can point out their personality anywhere. Originality. Cliches are almost always looked down upon. Use them as sparingly as possible. Make the beginning as interesting as possible. Don?t build a climax until all the conflicts and tensions have been experienced. That in of itself is a failure since you won?t feel an impact or real resolution say for example when a person dies who you had followed for the entire story. Sound. Believe it or not sound is important. Cliche lines sound bad to read on paper so do pretentious lines. For example. ?¨He felt better everyday because of it.¨ ¨I knew he could always do better?¨ ¨What can a person do?¨ ¨The limelight had him bewitched.¨ Fantasy uses this a lot to its advantage, proof that it is used. But dont get me wrong I mean the ordinary sound of words and sentences in your story. If they sound strange or unoriginal or in anyway or "pretends" then take it out. That mean it may sound bad even not having to be cliche to say that. If you did not write the sentences around it well that line will stick out and get you. It will become distracting. Plot is obvious so I won't mention it here in this workshop. Until then, and when I learn from what I read and write I will share. |
| Note: My english writing skills need work so don´t even think of asking me to change it entirely or relearn my english (the impossible). I don´t like the signature, I willl eventually add a picture. | |
