First, go here and watch the trailer and IGN's video preview of the movie. See if you can get through it all with a straight face. Now, the game I propose is to try to guess what score this movie is going to get from Rottentomatoes. Once I got past the shock of finding out that this movie is actually being made (seriously Hollywood, stop making movies based on games. They all suck), I noticed a couple things. Firstly, Chun Li has been made into a woman wearing black who jumps around dark buildings and kicks people. And she doesn't have a double-bun hairdo. In other words, she has become totally generic. Also, M. Bison is a blonde European guy in a business suit with a mustache and a goatee. I'm not a Street Fighter purist by any means, but when the filmmakers can't even make the characters recognizable, I know there's a problem. Also, the acting and fight choreography looks pretty bad. Have I mentioned that none of the footage shows Chun Li doing a lightning kick or a spinning bird kick? I'm going to be bold and predict Rottentomatoes gives this a 15%. Any other movie of this quality will get 10%, but since this is based on a videogame, you can count on some fanboy reviewer out there giving it a good score because it offers new layers of depth to the material or something pseudo-intellectual like that. Place your bets. The winner gets a cookie. |

*Sigh* When will Hollywood learn? Making a film based on a game is hard enough, making one based on a fighting game is even worse and of course, not sticking to source material closely or even making their actors have the smallest semblance of their game counterparts usually means the film will burn. The only one that I could see actually bearing a resemblance to their charecter, or that I could make out at least, was Vega and Michael Clark Duncun (who I assume is playing Balrog). There are perhaps less than a handful of videogame films that I actually enjoy, and even less being in pre or post production that I actually want to see. And even then, I doubt they will relate the same sort of experience I had playing the games. Back to this debacle, I feel it would have been better if they had just released it as another generic action flick without using the Street Fighter name. Kristin Kreuk, whilst she may have Asian lineage, does not look like Chun Li in my mind. From the looks of it though, they are keeping to the charecters story of a a police officer investigating Bison (I was never a massive SF fan though, MK was more my shebang) so thats a small plus. I can only wait and see how it turns out but I'd give it an average score of 30%. I'll probably end up watching it, like all videogame films, just for kicks but I doubt this film will top the place that Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie has in me heart. And that mostly there for the shower scene

I believe that's true. Which is why it's hilarious that the only time you see him fighting in the movie is when he shoots at Chun Li with a rocket launcher. Way to accurately represent the boxer character, filmmakers!
There's also Moon Bloodgood in there who plays a new character who hasn't appeared in the games. At first, I wondered why they would put in a completely new character instead of just grabbing another character from the series like perhaps Cammy. But then I realized that Moon Bloodgood is half-Korean. Maybe the filmmakers are figuring that Kreuk and Bloodgood would represent one whole Asian between them. Did you notice the fireball motion she made at the end? Do you think she's actually going to throw a fireball in the movie? It would be a tad unrealistic, but then again, we're not exactly dealing with Black Hawk Down here. I'll be a tad annoyed if she does a fireball but never throws an air stomp or a lightning kick (although we do see her wall jump a few times). |

I'm saying it gets around a 17%, if only for special effects and and action. There will likely be no real plot, but I bet it will get a pretty good income I think because it will appeal a lot to kids who have no idea what the actual video game looks like. I mean I like Kristin Kreuk as an actress, I think she's very attractive and better than most actresses these days. But I would have never thought of her if you asked me to think of someone to play Chun-Li. I mean she's Canadian, and I don't even think her lineage is Chinese. I'd have picked some true Chinese actress at the very least. But really I'm not a big fight game fan, so I don't know a lot about Street Fighter. Anybody checked out the Dragonball: Evolution movie? Same deal as this really. |

VG Cats Btw, I think this movie is going to suck for two combined reasons. The first is that they're trying so hard to make this not like the last street fighter movie, that people who watch it are going to go, "Why is this a street fighter movie?" But they're still trying to make it a street fighter movie so by trying to make it as far from a street fighter movie but still a street fighter movie, they're going to choke themselves like a dog straining at the end of it's leash. I just saw it today and...it sucks. Completely. The constant narration really gritted on me, Kristin Kreuk was an awful Chun Li and the lack of any really epic fight scenes was a real let down. The last fight with Bison was rather rubbish, I mean she threw a freaking fire ball at the guy. WTF? I mean Im not even a Street Fighter fan but come on Hollywood, give us something we can at least laugh at for being so shitty. Like Street Fighter: The Movie. That film was so awful it was funny. So yeah, this gets a massive thumbs down from me. Lets hope they dont attempt a sequel. |

So to all of you who predicted that this movie would get a 10% on the Rottentomatoes meter? You're all wrong. It has 5%. Judging from Eddie's review, I guess that's not too surprising. I was wondering how that fireball in the trailer would show up. The fact that it was apparently the ultimate finisher move in the boss fight is kind of sad but not really surprising. Was this movie even recognizable as being based on Street Fighter? I wonder if we would have even known that without a main character named Chun Li and a bad guy named Bison. Between this and Resident Evil: Degeneration, I think Capcom is going to have to rethink their whole movie strategy. When the best anybody can say about your movie is that it's neither the worst nor the best videogame movie out there, you've got problems because even the best videogame movie fundamentally sucked. Hopefully long before Devil May Cry gets adapted (you know it's coming). Edited by Xantar, Mar 7 2009, 05:04 PM.

I'll admit that Im not a big Street Fighter fan, so I'm not well up on the lore and many of the stories that run through the series so feel free to point me out when Im wrong. Spoilers Warning (Just in case someone decides to actually plan to see it) To me it's only slightly recognisable as being based off Street Fighter: On charecter design alone the only one that comes close for me anyway, is Vega; and even he is screwed up. There no grace, no style, no bare chest and fancy ponytail. He looks and acts like Jason Voorheyes with hair. They totally screw up (what little we actually come to know in the film) the guys story too, making him out to be ugly under the mask rather than the handsome person he is ingame. The kicker? He's in the film for maybe a max of twenty minutes. Balrog doesnt have his boxing gloves and seems to be a penned to have no basis upon his video game counterpart other than Michael Clarke Duncun is big and black. The upside is he does do some boxing punches. *insert half hearted 'yay'* Gen is far too young to be recognised as Gen. I actually thought he was Ryu when I first saw him. The whole suggestion of romance between him and Chun Li was so damn lame too, and in all honesty should have been left out of the film for the sake of the films story and a general 'Oh my god, not another cliche romance subplot' reaction from me. I cant believe I said that this film would get maybe 30% - 40%. Luckily I'll always have the cheesy first SF movie and, of course, Chun Li's nakedness from the animated film. |

Why am I not surprised? Gee lets make a movie because there is a lot of hype and buzz going on with the new SF4 game. But we aren't going to ask anyone involved in the making of any of the games, or manga to write the script. We'll hire someone else to write the script, sign some recognizable actors, throw some special effects in there, and voila! You have a cash cow for the next couple of years. Don't forget the sequel called, Chun Li: The Hadouken master! Not to mention the foreseeable remake of this movie in lets say oh about 3-5 years from now. Tch. If only some more of these Hollywood rejects would fucking learn some sense and act with some kind of integrity. Whats the sense of even going through the motions if you know the budget it terrible, and the script is so bad? Whatever happened to the idea, "if you can't do it right, then don't do it at all?" Oh well, I didn't expect much anyways, but I don't think any movie based on a video game will ever be good. Just look at the track record. For some odd reason no-one with any sense of respect for people that play video games will ever design/direct/produce a movie of this type. They all think we're some post lobotomy rejects that will enjoy any ole slapstick piece of crap thrown together so obviously haphazardly. I guess we'll always have Street Fighter II <-- as the next best thing. |

I would actually argue that there's a bigger issue which is that no videogame can be made into a truly good movie. No videogame ever made has had a great plot that can stand up well on its own. Yes, I include the Final Fantasy games in this. Yes, I include the Half-Life game. Yes, I'm including Metal Gear as well. In fact, if they ever make Metal Gear into a movie, it's going to be awful because all the ridiculous over the top action and meta-humor just doesn't work if you're not controlling the action (I also happen to think that Metal Gear's story is just plain bad even in the context of the game, but I understand not everybody thinks that). No live action movie based on Street Fighter could possibly be good because as was pointed out before, if you stay faithful to the games it will look cheesy and if you don't it will look generic. You could say the same thing about Metroid, Zelda, Halo, Gears of War, Devil May Cry...the list goes on. A lot of these would translate pretty well into anime, but live action movie is not going to work. By necessity, games are a little bit cartoonish, and by their very nature, movies are a little bit realistic. |

Video games do need better plots. Its never quite a nail on the head, its always just around the mark. However, there is always an exception to every rule.... There is someone who has successfully merged novels, movies, and video games. Tom Clancy <-- The man has been writing some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters of all time (Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games). Whilst writing best seller novel after best seller novel. Lets not forget the Tom Clancy games <-- |

Well I know somebody who saw it and he said it was complete garbage. Chun-Li only wore loose buns for like a short minute. He also informed me to something I didn't know. Not sure how common knowledge it is since I'm not a big SF fan. But M. Bison was originally named "M. Tison" as a reference to Mike Tyson and his character was what is now Balrog. Balrog was originally the name for M. Bison's character. When they transferred it to America they switched the names for lawsuit purposes. I couldn't be sure if they still have the names in the original fashion in Japan or not. |

So I saw it just out of curiosity. Don't worry, I didn't pay for it. It's not even "so bad it's good." It's just bad. I'd say the actors deliver terrible line readings, but the truth is they have very little to work with. The whole voiceover idea is just a bad mistake. Chun-Li would walk around town and say, "I saw poverty everywhere and crimes that went unpunished" which is totally redundant because we can see that, too. It's kind of discouraging to know that you and five of your friends could each produce a better script than whoever was paid actual money to do this one. Actually, they did manage to work the spinning bird kick in there, but it looked terrible. For one thing, Kristin Kreuk's stuntwoman couldn't do a full split (!). For another, she did it while wearing this awful poncho dress thing with gold boots. That was the part Slappy was talking about when she wore hair buns. The other hilarious thing about that scene is apparently Chun-Li got dressed up so she could go to a club. At this club, she approaches the CEO of Bison's conglomerate (who is a woman) and dances a little bit. Then they dance around each other for a little bit, stare at each other intensely, then Chun-Li walks into the bathroom. Then the CEO follows. Yep. Chun-Li seduces a woman. Don't jump up and see the movie yet, though, because all that happens in the bathroom is Chun-Li immediately beats down on the CEO. I guess I'd be bothered about Gen being considerably younger, but then again, he's played by Liu Kang so I can't get too worked up about it. He and Chun-Li's dad are probably the only legitimate martial artists in the whole film (Vega is played by one of the Black Eyed Peas who actually does Jeet Kune Do, but you'd never know it with the amount of screen time he gets). Oh, and Bison, Vega and Balrog all get killed. I guess in the sequel they would have Ryu kill Sagat and Akuma. And then...maybe Guile fights Honda just for kicks? The filmmakers claimed they have sequels planned, but I really don't see where they could take the story if they run out of villains. No matter, though. A sequel isn't going to happen after this train wreck. I guess it's good for a drinking game with your buddies. Otherwise, just stay away unless you really really want to waste two hours. In which case you might as well just play WOW or something. Oh, and by the way:
Yes, but he's just the creator of various franchises that span novels, movies and videogames. Some of his novels have been made into movies, and some of his movies have been made into games. But none of his games have been made into movies. How in the world do you suppose Ghost Recon could work as a movie? I suppose Splinter Cell is a somewhat plausible movie, but if you look at the plot, you'll realize that it's just a standard action-thriller you've seen a hundred times before. Without being able to actually control Sam Fisher, you wouldn't think there's anything special about it. So my point still stands. Edited by Xantar, Mar 8 2009, 11:28 AM.
