I do see a lot of babies around, and I always think "it must be something in the water." *shrugs* I got a bun in the family oven myself. The article does do a decent job trying to offer explanations. Even alluding to personal ideological beliefs being a factor. Obviously its a combination of reasons as to the why of the recent birth boom. What I want to know is why does this seem largely unnoticed? So swept under the rug? We can weigh in the current economic crisis for sure. But I can't help but feel like that is a bit of a cop-out. It was an issue that was largely ignored during the Bush administration. Now that Obama has come out and said that even the government is accountable for its spending is when we see an economic crisis. I always thought that when the Bush admin was recklessly spending that it might come back to bite us in the ass. What I mean to say is that its sort of like having an elephant in the room. How could you not see it coming? Biggest baby boom of all time in the U.S happened 2 years ago, and we are starting to talk about it now? Edited by Malagossa, Mar 19 2009, 06:30 AM.

Well, we as a country were doing other shit. War and stuff. Bush made most of us feel like the end was near so we all just humped a lot thinking it could be our last time doing so. |

I don't think most people choose to have children because it will help them get more government money. Raising kids is still damned expensive... Your concern over population growth may be eased by the fact that our health care system is so bad that we have more people dying from preventable causes than any other industrialized country. Also, it might indicate that we're poorer because poor people have more children. It's true. |

So I'm doing a paper on Human Capital. For those who don't know, human capital is the skill set that people have that are an asset to a company that cannot be recorded with a monetary value. Well the point of this is that various studies have found that people with a higher education level not only make more money, but also have more skills that are useful to companies. Which makes sense. In addition, the more skills parents have, the fewer children they will have. This relates to the idea that more money means less kids and vice versa. I'm not sure what the lead to all of this is but there has to be something behind all this that I'm not seeing. |
