This game has been out for awhile, but I am surprised we haven't talked about it yet! I beat the game a month ago, and largely enjoyed the experience. But compared to a lot of the quality titles I've played lately, I felt that FF13 could have been so much more. In the end I was largely disappointed by the story, and the gameplay is linear to an extreme. The game takes you from one forgetful and predictable cinematic to another. The only cinematics that felt worthwhile to watch were for the summon monsters you encounter. The good news though is the game does pick up the pace around chapter 11, but why does it take so long to get there? If you are putting in the 13th some odd installment to a series, shouldn't you take the training wheels off? Anyone else that played this what say you? What do you think about the game? I'd give it a score of 8/10, with the battle system being the high point, and the story being the low point. |

<< Personally... I loved it. I think the story was simple enough and not to hard to keep up with. I enjoyed the characters, Lightning and Fang being my favorites and the CG'ing IS amazing. And one of my favorite quotes in the game? "A hero doesn't think! They just do!" And a funny thing... did you notice how Vanille MOANS at EVERYTHING? Like seriously, moans when she walks, talks, gets hit, uses magic, attacks. It was just... awkward. |

That would imply that Lish has a job, or intentions of getting a job, or a console to play it on. |

I have it, got it the day it came out, and thus far have only played it for about fourty minutes. I was really excited for it to come out, but I think I ended up playing an old game more... or WoW. It just couldn't hold my attention. |

I feel ya Slappy, the game is slow rolling to start. It does get better, but like Xantar said this game is like food poisoning in that it gets better after the first 24 hours. Again, it's a sad state of affairs when a game is even designed this way. Most of the cutscenes have such a campy pg-13 feel to it that it's almost embarassing to watch at times. If I were to play this game thru again (which I doubt I would do) then I would skip EVERY cutscene. The CGI is well done, but the substance to the plot just isn't there. The first 11 chapters (out of 13) feel like you are watching one horrendously long movie. Let's put it this way, you could probably watch Avatar 3 times in a row before finishing all the CGI movies from the game. Which isn't to say that having a ton of lengthy cutscenes is such a bad thing, but the fact that they don't stand apart on their own is a major turn-off for me. I honestly believe that if they put half the time into designing the game as they did the CGI then the entire product would have greatly benefited. The bottom line here is that sheer amount of CGI makes the rest of the game feel like an after thought. Conceptually that isn't a huge problem. Make a movie, slice it up into segments, and sprinkle generously throughout the game. Then once you beat the game, have an unlocked theatre mode where you can watch the movie in it's entirity outside of the context of the game. However, the problem is the CGI movies are really that bad, with 60% of it being cheesy dialogue between characters. Lastly, I am also not a big fan of the adrogynous characters that look like they could be a guy or a girl. I feel like this series is starting to have a heavily recycled feel with the character designs/outline looking more and more familiar with each installment in this series. In this game Snow=Dell, Lightning=Yuna, Vanille=Rikku, Hope=Zidance/Tidus. At least Sazh, and Fang are refreshingly original. Yet despite everything I just said these are ultimately minor nuisances to me. The monster battles are no longer cannon fodder to plow through, and are much more satisfying (especially endgame) than any other final fantasy title. The game also opens up (full talent trees/monster hunts) after you beat the end boss, and the endgame portions of FF13 feel much more like.... well a Final Fantasy game. I played this game after playing so many recent quality titles like, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, God of War 3, and Batman: Arkham Asylum. The thing I love about these titles is either A; how satisfying the combat is, and/or B; how much personalization/customization options available to the player to make the game feel like their own. Ultimately, I feel that Final Fantasy is in desperate need of some fresh blood and new ideas. Edited by Malagossa, May 22 2010, 02:44 PM.

Exactly my point! This series needs to stop making little baby steps of changes and just overhaul the whole game each time. Fortunes tend to favor the people who aren't afraid of being bold, and I feel like they'd rather recycle old components into slightly newer ways much like a song remix. Also (like a remix) it doesn't matter who sings it, and what instrument you use it's still the same song. It's maddening in so many ways to actually watch a series de-evolve! Yea it's got a shinier cover, more hype, and it's next gen. I thought if anyone can set the bar higher it would be final fantasy. Instead they gave us a very good recycled version of the same game since FF7. But unlike even 7 where who you have in the party can alter the direction of the story or conversation, we get the same linear (did I mention long?) story every time you play. I just felt the game somehow comes up short on immersing the gamer into the story. There is no way to really personalize anything but what path you start on in the crystal tree. Yet in the end you have to max the crystal tree to get the game's full achievements/trophies finished. So ultimately, everyone gets the same basic flat, cookie cutter built characters. I haven't played it yet because I'm playing STreet Fighter 4, Alan Wake, and Magic: The Gathering instead, but I can offer my criticisms of the game anyway. Hope is adorable. Linear is better then open-world. World maps are for losers. Game probably still sucks though. |

Hahaha, well said Trippy, even though I disagree. but I'm also more into shooters at this point in my life. Considering picking up my PSP to play some good old fashion RPGs or Tactics games soon though. Awesome comparison pic Marci, I mean the producers even said she is "a female Cloud." I personally like the male version better because I thought he was bad ass as a kid so I feel a nostalgic attachment to him. Plus big swords will always be awesome to me. But Female Cloud wasn't even hot, nor did she have a big sword, plus she was moody and quiet. Still haven't played the game. Should have traded it in when I could still get a high value. Oh well. I'm playing Red Dead Redemption now and that makes me happy. |

The beauty is in the eye of the beholder isn't it? I don't really like linear though, in that I like to take my own path. Invisible walls, not being able to explore a town, not being able to find shops, bars or inns. It just goes against the nature of being a "role playing game." Again, it felt like I was running from one CGI to the next, with very little in-between like a rat in a maze with some cheese at the end. Except the maze is a 4 foot hallway with a door at each end. You'd think, "Oh that's not so bad if the cheese is good." But I have news for you my friend. The cheese is very old, and moldy. Edited by Malagossa, Jun 8 2010, 10:59 PM.

There's a threshold for linear and open-world in RPG-styled games, in between which games are generally ok. If you go towards one end of the spectrum (Entirely linear), you might as well have made a visual novel, and if you go too far towards the other end (GTA-style) there's too much shit to do and you won't get anything done. FFXIII sounds dangerously close to the former, but I'd rather have a linear experience then one where I steal a few cars and piddle around on a bike for an hour and then stop playing because I have no motivation. |

See, I play games like GTA and Saint's Row and Red Dead Redemption all of the time. I like the multiplayer aspect the most, but being able to do whatever I want is always fun. I can understand there not being a lot of motivation at times, especially once you've completed the story. but then you either start over or move on to a new game just like any other game. Or if you're like me you get online with your friends and battle or cause mayhem or just cruise and kill the police. |

Multi-player is an entirely different animal. Having a multi-player aspect normally adds to a games "re-playability." Take the multi-player out of most modern games and they wouldn't have enjoyed half of the success they received. Would anyone have put in over 40 hours of Warcraft, Starcraft, Halo (1,2,and 3) Call of Duty, etc without those games being multi-player? The answer to that question is a, "probably not." I also want to add to my earlier point about linear games. Again, I almost like the idea of a visual/graphic novel if you can plot your course, pick your destinations, and the order in which you can travel to those places. But I don't like being forced to go in only one direction. Why replay the game if it's going to be the same experience everytime? Besides that I feel like a lot of "open world" games can be played in a linear fashion. Take a game like Oblivion for instance, a game that's as open world as they come. In that game you can strictly follow a "main" quest line to beat the game. Sure there a dozens of side quests, but the beauty is that you don't have to do them if you don't want.
