Just borrowing this space to host something for this contest: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/488 “Poison Apple” (23) Lands 23 Swamp (16) Creatures 4 Reassembling Skeleton 3 Liliana’s Specter 2 Royal Assassin 3 Grave Titan 4 Demon of Death’s Gate (21) Other Spells 3 Liliana Vess 2 Duress 2 Sign in Blood 2 Jinxed Idol 3 Mind Rot Corrupt 2 Rise from the Grave 4 Doom Blade 2 Necrotic Plague (15) Sideboard 4 Liliana’s Caress 1 Liliana’s Specter 4 Temple Bell Mind Rot 2 Sign in Blood 3 Haunting Echoes Apples are fruits known for being luscious and red on the outside, with their insides full of sweet nectar and crisp flesh. But sometimes, apples go bad. Even though the skin may appear as beautiful and perfect as it ever was, once you bite in and taste the foul, mushy rot you’ll wish you’d just had a burger instead. The deck I’ve built for Liliana is a lot like a poisoned apple. Once your enemy takes a single bite, they’ll wish they’d never even tried. The deck’s main purpose is to take advantage of Liliana’s own abilities, drawing out lots of fatties like Grave Titan and Demon of Death’s Gate and then tossing them directly into the graveyard with Liliana’s +1 ability, all the while charging up to resurrect them in one fell swoop with her -8 power. The rest of the cards in the deck facilitate this maneuver. Creatures like Liliana’s Specter and the Reassembling Skeletons provide defensive support in the air and on the ground, and cards like Doom Blade and Royal Assassin help clear up any messes that prove too troublesome for your chumps. Further, Jinxed Idol and Necrotic Plague keep the field empty and the graveyards full, while doing little to yourself with your easily revived skeletons. This effect pulls double duty in keeping you and Liliana alive long enough to pull off her power and storm towards victory while simultaneously making her -8 power ever stronger. Sign in Blood les you draw all your fatties, and Mind Rot pulls double duty, allowing you to cripple your opponent’s hand as well as dump even more fatties into your grave should you pull one too many. And if things really get desperate (which they shouldn’t, Liliana is ALWAYS in control) there’s a Corrupt for emergency removal and life gain, as well as Rise from the Grave to pull creatures from the grave directly. But if that’s all you thought this deck could do, you’re quite mistaken. Like the Brother’s Grimm tale of Snow White and the Evil Queen, the deck’s first appearance is a lie to lull the opponent into a false sense of security. Only after the first match ends and you are given access to the sideboard do the deck’s true colors shine. Side out all the fat, the plagues, the idols, the resurrection, and two skeletons and replace them with the full 15-card sideboard to transform the deck from a graveyard recursion deck into a full-fledged black control/discard deck! Each card in the deck pulls double duty during this change of masks. Mind Rots previously used to force cards to your graveyard are now turned on the opponent to hurt them directly with Liliana’s Caress. The Sign in Bloods along with the newly switched in Temple Bells cover a common weakness with discard decks, and force cards into your opponent’s hand on your turn so that you can take them right back out with the discard spells you’ll be drawing simultaneously. Specters that used to be a purely defensive measure suddenly switch into offensive beaters, taking cards from your opponent’s hand and swinging through the air for even more damage. If your opponent tries to fight back, you have plenty of board control with the Doom Blades and Assassins. And if all that wasn’t bad enough already, you can slap a Haunting Echoes down to completely dismantle your opponent’s deck from the inside out, leaving them trembling and probably weeping in terror. Liliana is the evil queen as much as she is the poisoned apple. She draws you in with a beautiful face and sweet words, but once she caresses your cheek and you take the bait, you’ll see her true face and know your end has come.
