I have only had one set of bad bites in 8-10 litters. The bad bites came from a bitch that hadn't had any in previous litters. Go figure.

Jamie,
I have had a BUSY weekend and will explain more later after my brain rests.
To answer your question in the simplest form. The pup gets one gene for each set from each parent. So if neither parent has a bad bite but one or more of the pups do, then EACH parent is responsible as they EACH carry the recessive gene that just happened to pair up in the pup(s).
These guys crack me up when they worry about a bite but will breed to a broken down bow legged dog. One fault is no worse than the other. I have heard people say that a female can't chew the cord off of her pups if she has a bad bite..................I NEVER saw a bitch chew with her front teeth, LOL.
Would I breed to a bad bite dog? No...but I wouldn't breed to one with a major running gear fault either. That's why I don't breed very often outside of my kennel. Seen some well built dogs and some awesome running dogs, just don't find many hounds that are BOTH built well and run like I want. I will not settle.
Another thing to consider is if the bitch has a good bite AND does NOT carry the recessive gene for the bite, none of the pups will have it but it WILL show up in some of their offspring's if they are ever bred to a dog that carries that gene also. So......even if you don't get any pups with bad bites, you are still bringing the gene into your line because the male that HAS a bad bite doesn't have the good bite gene to pass on. Just the bad bite gene.
In all seriousness, you can breed that bad gene out but you have to be ruthless and it will take generations BUT the same goes with any gene.
I hope that made sense

This was an e-mail sent to me by Southernbeagles I thought it was good and that yall would like to read it when it comes to dogs and there genes this lady knows her stuff.

It was a big help to me maybe it will be to you as well.

Bad Bites

AS Jamie stated and Southernbeagles. The bad bite will show up again. I wouldn't breed to a dog with a bad bite for that reason. As one man told me before the bite doesn't run the rabbit. I once took in a pair of pups with the worse bite I had ever seen. As aduts the females lower jaw was at least 1 inch shorter then the top with the male being worse. I really don't know how the ate. I had run into hard times when I took then in and wanted young dogs to add in with my dogs that were ageing. I got them started and had in the mean time acquired some pups with good conformation so when I got those started I gave the bad bite dogs to an elderly gentleman friend of my dads that said bite and papers don't run the rabbit, and tore up the papers so this trait wouldn't get into our registered stock again. AS bad as the bite of these dogs were now as I think back I should have let the breeder put them down even though the older gentleman had fun with them for several years, but breeding them could have been an awful thing to do to the breed.

I just Sent one Off yesterday to a Young 8 year old Girl as a b day gift, One of the best LOOKING dogs i have bred in years Gave him to her Free No papers and an agreement that he be Cut!!!! WHY bad bite!!! I could not use him and Would not use him...
Now as far as where it came from. Not sure as this breeding Was to a CH female that We have known the history on For YEARS back. no bad bites that we know of on either side at least 5 generations back...
Was told aby another breeder that it was just a fluke happens Sometimes...
But WHy would you want to take the chance on Addiong this to a line of Dogs if none had it previously All littermates have very Good Scissor bites just this one male.
We just Wont take the chance on adding this to a line....
From Field to show from Show to field the way it should be

Todd, Just shoot me! <_<
Guess it's too late I've got four offspring out there. Only one can stud though.
The little gyp's will have trouble staying away from him though, He's good looking just like his dad. No underbite though.
You know I never really could run a rabbit though. Pretty good jumpdog though. :P

What about the bad bite that shows up in the pups of some of the most well known studs to date. I'm not going to name names but I've seen it pop up in quite a few. So do we still breed to them??? What about the bitch? Do we breed a bitch with a bad bite?

Personaly I would rather breed a bitch with a bad bite than one that hooks and skirts and barks around every where.

Gary...My comments were all in fun, I'm sure you took them that way --- and while we're on the subject --- you are raising a fine young man I must agree and having never had the chance to meet the s --- I would guess the same for them as well ---- Fact is they must have one heck of a mother and men must have been hard to find where she came from. LOL

My thoughts on the original topic........Flaws are just that, whether conformation, running ability, pen manners, temperment etc.......Just have to make up your mind when contimplating a mating ----- Am I willing to put up with one just like this one?

Actually she was the first woman to date me that I actually wanted to date. That I did date.
The rest I tried to cross their bridge and couldn't answer their riddle.
