Ashes, ashes; We all fall down...

Kalista had been scanning the west side of the border, her normal, early-morning tasks accomplished. It was past noon now; but deep withing to depths of the forest was pitch black; and Kalista had just a single candle to light her path. She strode over to a cluster of trees and sank down against one, a tall maple tree with a thick trunk and mighty branches. She set the candle beside her and crossed her arms over his chest, taking a break from what she had hoped to accomplish that day, and closing her eyes thoughtfully.

Carter was nearby, walking through the forest. Despite it's darkness, he had grown to wandering around here so often, he knew the forest well enough to go in without the aid of light. As looked around, he noticed a flicker of light from a candle. As he moved closer, he noticed Kalista sat beside the light. Was she sleeping? thought Carter as he knelt down beside her to check if she was indeed asleep or just resting.

Kalista peered through her eyes, opening them just slightly at a hint of movement close to where she lounged. "Oh. Its just you. Hello, Carter." Kalista greetd him with a nod of her head, opening her eyes fully this time to gaze at him. She moved the candle a bit out of the way and fixed her position so she wasn't slumping as much.

"What are you doing?" he asked her with arms cross as he stood up to his full height once more. "Do you often come in here just to think?"

She stared at him for a long moment before slowly nodding her head. "Yes.. Sometimes." She replied quietly. "But I was patrolling. I'm just resting now." Kalista explained, shrugging her shoulders lightly at the matter. "And what are you doing here in the forest?" She then asked him curiously.

"Walking is all," he grunted. "Good for clearing the mind, you know. I come here often enough."

Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by?

There was a noise from a distance; it was the sound of leaves and bushes. "Carter?" a voice called, softly. A few moments later Lynette pushed through some bushes and into the clearing where Kalista and Carter were conversing. "Oh, hi, Kalista," she said softly with a smile.

Kalista opened her mouth to exchange more words to Carter when; to her sheer relief; Lynette suddenly stepped in. "Hello Lynette." Kalista replied in greeting to her, glancing back to Carter before looking to the newcomer once more. "And what are you doing here?" She then asked her, curiousity taking its toll again as to why they were all in the depths of the forest at the same precise moment.

"I couldn't find Carter anywhere," said Lynette quietly. "I know he comes into the forest sometimes, so I thought I would look." She twisted one of her tight curls around her finger shyly.

Carter smiled slightly as he looked over at Lynette. "Well, you've found me," he told her.

"It wasn't hard," said Lynette quietly, though she sounded slightly amused. "I don't know how you can see in here though... Even with the candle, it's dreadfully dark..."

"After one hundred years, some things just stick," said Carter. "You learn your way around the place." He shrugged like it was no big deal, which it wasn't.

Arabella was doing her usuall patrolls around the area, always feeling compelled to help the new ones in need. When she suddenly stumbled upon a gathering. Overhearing Carters last words, she laughed lightly, approaching in the dark, her pale skin seeming to glow. "That is very true..." she said in a softy velvet voice.

Kalista glanced up from their gathering to see Arabella now approaching. She looked at her puzzedly as to how they were all in the exact same spot in the vast forest, at the same time. Dismissing the thought without a second guess, Kalista smiled to her and nodded her head. "Hello there." she greeted her with another warm smile.
