Now usually I don't even give hacks of Castlevania a second glance, unless they're unique in a good way. So far, none of the ones I've seen are (I've seen a couple of good Castlevania II hacks though). Then I stumbled across this: Castlevania: Chorus of Mysteries From the look of things, it's actually hacked to the point where it's almost a whole new game. There's even a new soundtrack and at least one new item to use. I downloaded the patch, but unfortunately can't get it to work on FCEU. I never could figure out how to use patches, though, so that's no surprise. Can anyone help me out? |

D'OH! Bad news... I've done everything I can to get it to run on mine, and it's no good. I even tried running it on another emulator (NESten), and it's all garbled and glitchy, not to mention it freezes on the title screen. I get the impression that the patch is unfinished, but... well, either we seek help elsewhere, or we wait until they work more on CoM here. It's too bad... this looks like the best damn CV hack I've ever seen. Ah well... I'll at least get you as far as I can when it came to playing other CV hacks on this page, some of which are actually decent. Anyway... Step 1: Get the Lunar ISP program in the link I gave. That's what's needed to apply the appropriate patch. Step 2: Get an unaltered Castlevania... you-know-what (Hint: It starts with an R and ends with an M... I'm afraid of badgering the ToS here). Step 3: Download the patch which you want to affix to the regular CV R*cough*M. Step 4: With the Lunar ISP thingy, the patch should be a heart icon. Double-click on the patch and append it to the CV (blankity-blank) that you want altered. Step 5: Run the (radio edit) in your emulator, and behold a new-ish game! Test it on any of the other patches in that link and see if they work... and see if CoM doesn't work, because I can't get it to. >_< And P.S.: I also bloody hate patches. Why can't they just already have a pre-patched (R... COUGHCOUGHCOUGH OH DEAR I'M DYING OF TUBERCULOSIS COUGHCOUGHCOUGH) available for download? Instead, we have to go through this rigamarole... *sigh* |

I agree 100%, but I'm sure they have their reasons. Watch someone go ahead and actually do a patched *cough* at some point. I'll give your instructions a whirl and see what happens... |

So I saw this topic and said "Holy crap. I gotta give it a shot." I've got it working. I'm not 100% certain of this board's rules on emulation so I'll just leave it at that for now. For now... |

I've been playing this in VirtuaNES for a while now, folks. Should be fine in that. :) Overall, it's pretty well designed and a cut above any other hack I've seen. Nice chip version of Dance of Pales on the 5th level, too! To be honest, though, it can be a tad boring... |

I didn't play it for too long. I got rather annoyed with the second level and haven't picked it back up. It is pretty well done, though. |

BUMP FROM THE GRAVE!!! I nearly forgot about CoM here until I happened upon a trio of YouTube videos detailing it from start to finish! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btviKI1Hl9w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Pa9WDQ51go&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYjCz4PTRJQ&feature=related Since the damn patch never worked for me, this is probably the closest I'll get to experiencing the game. Damn fine, if I do say so myself. However, I'm not totally crazy about the musical arrangements... 'cept for the impressive 8-bit replication of Dance of Pales, as Klat mentioned above. |

After watching those, I want a pre-patched... *cough*... that I can use with Nester DC. I don't believe patches work with it. And as it turns out, the patched *aHEM* does exist, but every link I've found for it is dead. Hmmm. |

Played around with it on Nester DC this morning and I made it up to Slogra (stage 3 boss). Damn, but he's tough. There are parts of the game that are just plain brutal. So far, I like it quite a bit. I have to say that it really does feel like an entirely new game rather than just another Castlevania hack. For that reason alone, I approve of it. |

Welp, it wasn't easy, but I did beat it. I must concur that Slogra is a bitch, mostly because if you blow it on the last segment of the third stage, all you'll get to fend him off with is the stupid goddamn dagger. Whose idea was that?! Thankfully, you get crosserangs (IIRC) before the latter three bosses, which is gracious indeed... because they are really damn tough for sure. In my opinion, definitely harder than the original CV. The new music also grew on me, and I reckon it's pretty good from unofficial programmers. The graphics are very damn good, and although the sprites don't have much animation... hey, they didn't in the original game, but fancy animations weren't needed. The sprites themselves are far more detailed than they were originally, and the stages look damn fine. The more I play CoM, the more awesome it gets. :) |

So I was on a Castlevania streak, and I read this thread and without doubt tried this. I have to say, it took me longer to beat than the original game for sure. The bgm for level 5 is indeed a great remix for 8-bit. Though I surely find the Medusa Heads to be more fast in spawning(Though they do not spawn when you are on a stair. Also, in Level 4, is it me or those eyeballs spewing floaties resemble those fetuses(minus the body) found in Splatterhouse 2's Level 3? Also, the green leaf item is great when going through medusas/ravens/skull-with-wings. |
