Bionic Commando (NES) Remember how I said that I needed to play the original before playing Rearmed because I was afraid I would never go back to it? Surprisingly, Rearmed inspired me to play the original and I finally got into. I'm so ashamed of myself for not having given it a fair chance, before, it's a damn good game and I appreciate both it and the remake a lot more now. Also makes me appreciate the remixed tracks in the remake more, too, both games had some damn good music. |

I hope we're talking about single-credit runs on default settings. If so, many congrats to both of you! R-Type II and Gradius III (arc) 1CCs require serious time-investments. And are only achieved by people with huge penises. (Edit: mind you, even if you credit-feed to the end of an R-Type game, you're still forced - by the checkpoint system - to properly learn every inch of the game anyway, so beating 'em that way is still an achievement.) Glad you like Bionic Commando, Dual! I've heard some miserable bastards moaning about the remake because "the NES game was an insult to the arcade version anyway", but that's such bullshit. The NES game was the only good one until now. Rearmed is incredible. :D BTW, I've recently got myself an Xbox Live account (I didn't like my scores showing up under my little bro's rubbish Gears of War-inspired name :lol) and seem to be enjoying free month of the gold membership; anybody fancy sharing their GamerTags? Mine's the same as it is everywhere: Klatrymadon. |

1: Have YOU 1CCed R-Type 2? If so, you're demented and you have no life. :lol B: It's enough of an accomplishment for me to beat the damn game. 1CCing ain't a priority for me... though, I did do that with the original Castlevania several times, and once without even losing a single life. Oh, and the same thing with Battletoads. No kiddin'. ;) 3: I saw a few people bitching at the GameFAQs boards about the fact that you can't even FUCKING JUMP. Geez. D: What an unfortunate coincidence. My Gold subscription JUST expired. I can't believe I spent my last minutes playing as an ENGINEER on TF2, of all classes. I failed to get the achievement that went with it too. Goddammit. :( |

Nah, I haven't done R-Type II, but I was practicing on and off for a few weeks last year. I just kinda gave up, because it really is that hard in places. I can never bring myself to continue in a shmup, though. I've done most of the others (and Graddy III), but I think I met my match there... Sorry to hear about your expiry, mate! Would it let me add your username anyway, though? For future reference, I mean. |

I have beaten Star Parodier, the "cute-em-up" installment of the Star Soldier series, and from what I understand, the last great game in the series. Thankfully, it's not as overly brutal as Super Star Soldier, or not even as harsh as Soldier Blade. Hell, the only time I ever remember losing lives is at the final boss battle, which, despite being tough, still wasn't anywhere near the level of SSS's horrendous bastard. It almost felt a bit TOO easy to me, or maybe I'm just that good, but whatever the case, this game is awesome nonetheless. I'm glad that imports are starting to become more recognized on the Virtual Console, and I hope they release far more awesome. |

Namco X Capcom for PS2, after 99 1/2 hrs logged time for ONE SINGLE PLAYTHROUGH. Absolutely loved this game-more for the story than the gameplay, although that was fun too. The extended party at Maximoff Castle (from Darkstalkers) with the whole cast involved was a great ending. |

I whomped Ninja Gaiden Black on Hard difficulty and Bionic Commando Rearmed on Super Hard. Neither were very easy, obviously. :p Also, I just beat the NES Batman Returns, and it's quite damn good. I prefer the SNES game for being faster paced, but this is a fine title too... even though the fight against the Duck Machine totally sucks. I intend to take on Asterix, Bucky O'Hare, and Gaiapolis, as detailed in this shiny new article: http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/kon...mibeatemups.htm |

Finished a couple of different scenarios in both Mega Man: The Power Battles and Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters today. Since I saw nothing that would let you take on the other scenarios after completing one, I think it's safe to say I finished both games. Dual, please correct me if I'm wrong. |

I actually hardly remember anything about either of those games, I've probably played them about as much as you have. I remember there being different endings for each character in each game, and that's about it. Bass's ending in one of them had Zero, which was really neat.
Tell me what you think of the arcade Bucky O' Hare. I was a fan of the NES game and the cartoon when I was younger, and I never played the arcade one, despite hearing good things. |

Welp, I played through Asterix, Bucky O'Hare, and Gaiapolis. All were ripping awesome times. I don't know much about the comic Asterix, but it makes for a damn fun and well-structured beat-em-up. I'm not sure of any other BEU in which you get drunk to obliterate Roman soldiers. The Bucky O'Hare game is more of a multi-plane shoot-em-up (best akin to Konami's arcade Aliens game if I had to draw a comparison), even though it does have melee attacks and diving kicks. It's quite fun, and not knowing much about the show or comics, I think it'll appeal to fans of either or both. Gaiapolis is an overhead BEU with a LOT of impossibly painful boss fights. It's impressive on the graphics and sound premises, and it's quite a fun game to play, even allowing a password to allow your character to continue later. Also, I beat New Super Mario Bros again, and I intend to do everything possible in the game. I have almost accomplished this goal. Yesterday, I had a little retro trilogy of Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, and Bionic Commando, the latter two of which I have played their latter installments. I just went for Castlevania because I could, and... well, as fortune and acuity would have it, this marks the SECOND time I've beaten Castlevania without dying at all. I'm so proud. :) I had to go through the final stage of Ninja Gaiden three times to finally beat it. The final bosses were harder than I remember... though, ironically, the stage itself was not. Sure, it's still really painful, but I wasn't as overly frustrated to beat it as I usually am. Maybe that's because I've been through every single mission in Ninja Gaiden Black's Mission Mode... which, by the way, was a resounding success for all fifty. And as for Bionic Commando, I beat it without continuing at all. Not sure I've done that before, but once again, I'm proud. However, I have a new record for busted wire-taps: I have been assaulted a record SIX times throughout the entire game. It usually doesn't happen more than twice to me on playthroughs, but this was ridiculous! Oh well. At least none of the ambushes killed me. Well, that's how I end my summer of gaming. Quite a good season, in my opinion. When it comes to kicking ass, I've still got it. :D |

Yesterday, I finally snagged Assault Heroes and found it kickass... but those underground bonus scenes are a royal pain. And the third boss gave me ass pains. Still awesome, though. Though, mostly, I obtained AH with the remainder of the $20 points card I got, whose main purpose was Castle Crashers! I meant to beat it last night, but the penultimate boss is a royal douchebag who calls upon one of the most vicious beatdowns ever. Well, I picked it up again today, came a little more prepared (with healing potions to be specific), and I went on to beat that jackass and the epic final boss fight. I did it with the Red Lightning Knight, now I'm running through it again with the Green Poison Knight. God, but I see a lot of replay potential in this title. :D |

Genpei Toumaden and Genpei Toumaden: Kannoni for PC Engine. The second was a breeze, but finding the three pieces of the Imperial Regalia among the different branches and multiple level exits for the first was a royal pain-not to mention having to start over at the halfway point of the game EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU MISS A JUMP. |

I've actually been writing an article on both of those for a damn long while, and I'm on the cusp of finishing it, though I can't QUITE get to the end just yet. I'll have to work on it. Anyway, you beat Actraiser 2? Kudos, man. I think I have yet to do that on my own power. Last time I tried the end boss rush on Normal, I couldn't quite beat Tanzra. |

I was going to do Bionic Commando, and I was getting pretty far-but then I said "This is wrong". It was great fun, but its such a mainstay that playing it on the computer was just... bleck. So, I'm on a hunt. That's right, I will get it and an NES. Its about time too. |

Get a Yobo unit. Plays both NES and Famicom games, is cheap, and you don't have to worry about getting the problems that sometimes come with used consoles. EDIT:A caveat-Yobo makes all kinds of units-some play US Games, some Japanese, some both-one cool looking one plays both NES and SNES games. I didn't see any of the black unit (the one I have) that plays both Famicom and NES on eBay. Anyway, anyone who goes the Yobo route, make sure to ask the vendor if it'll play what you're looking for. |

Bionic Commando (Game Boy) Nearly forgot to add this one, been a week or two since I played it. Despite being not quite as good as the NES one, it's a damn good title on it's own and quite amazing for a GB game. I'd like to own a copy of this one. Castle Crashers (Xbox Live Arcade) A very fun beat 'em up from the creators of Alien Hominid. The full title of the game is actually "Castle Crashers: 4-Player Adventure," and they were wise to put that portion there. I really must stress before you buy this game that, like many beat 'em ups, it's very multiplayer oriented. If you don't have a friend to play this with (and I must warn you, they're still working out major bugs on online play), I very strongly suggest that you consider how big a fan you are of the genre before buying it. If you have one or more friends that you get a reliable connection with that you can convince to buy it, even if you're a passing fan of beat 'em ups, I recommend it considerably stronger than if you don't. The game is filled to the brim with replay value, little extras, and detail, making sure you do indeed get the bang for those extra five dollars. However, it does have a few difficulty balancing issues that become apparent on the "insane" difficulty, which is one of only two difficulty modes available for the game. It requires you to either exploit a special way to defeat a boss or grind for hours before it even becomes plausible to tackle (and even then, it's highly recommended you play with at least one other friend of adequate level). Most of you know me as a person who enjoys difficult games, but I enjoy games with legitimate difficulty. Although Insane mode is fun when you're very high-leveled, the enemies do too much damage and attack too quickly while you do too little damage if you're on a low level. It's a very arbitrary difficulty and isn't so much "hard" as it is tedious. Despite that, few people will even bother with insane mode, as I'm told there's no reward for completing it (I'm halfway through it, myself, been playing with a friend), and can be easily ignored. I am suspicious of it having the "true" ending, however, due to a few different things in the game, especially normal's ending, hinting that you're not getting the full story just yet. Anyway, bottom line is, if you have a friend to play with, buy this, if you don't and you're a fan of beat 'em ups, also buy it. It's worth the 5 dollars above most of the 800 point arcade titles. |

He's got a point; I can see how it could get a bit monotonous to solitary players. I, on the other hand, am an insane fan of the beat-em-up genre who is often used to being a lone wolf, and I think CC is a blast despite having no one else to play with. Sometime in the future, I intend to either get A: Good Gold membership to play online (even though I'm wary of buggy online play, or B: A second controller so me and my brother can kick ass. There is a RIDICULOUS amount of weapons to wield. You have your straightforward blades, cudgels, rods, and axes alongside decidedly less orthodox armaments. Some of the latter group includes a sausage, a lobster, a giant leaf, an umbrella, and a key that helps you get an Animal Orb (kawaii floating helpers that help you out in various awesome ways), but can be used to beat shit out of enemies as well. I don't think I've even found half of all the weapons yet, but thankfully, a list is over at the GameFAQs boards, a rare moment to actually see what the boards have to offer. |

Super Fantasy Zone This game had a lot of neat things. Really cute, incredibly colorful graphics (especially for a Genesis game), a good soundtrack, loads of different enemies, insane amounts of cool power-ups, awesome bosses... but I felt a lot of it was suffocated. Only getting to go to the shop once per level, not being able to choose when to switch weapons, being totally gimped if you died once on a boss, somewhat short length. It's somewhat unforgiving and very restrictive, but it has a lot of neat stuff underneath the restrictions that I felt would have been a lot cooler if they had expanded things a bit. Still, it was fun, and I liked it. Now to play the original a little more, I'm not too sure if I want to beat that one or not. |
